Position Specific Description

NextEra Energy's Tribal Relations staff engages with tribal communities across the country by working collaboratively with them early in energy project development to ensure that we identify, avoid where feasible, and help protect sensitive tribal cultural resources during development and construction. 

NextEra's approach has become a model in the energy industry and is widely recognized as one of the most effective in the country.

This position will work with all of the NextEra Energy business units to support tribal and indigenous relations during the development, construction, and operation of energy projects in the US and Canada. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain relationships with tribal officials, cultural representatives, and other tribal stakeholders to facilitate positive working relationships
  • Anticipate and respond to tribal community requests in support of issue avoidance/resolution, tribal business development and community support, and manage day to day dialogue  
  • Support development of tribal relationships with company executives
  • Work closely and seamlessly with the company's origination and business development, environmental, legal, engineering and construction, transmission, and project valuation teams on issue avoidance and resolution, business development on tribal lands, workforce development with tribes, and internal education and community support activities
  • Support development and implementation of internal training programs and policies to promote corporate diversity goals inclusive of Native American people
  • Support preparation and submission of necessary permits and approvals required to originate, develop, construct and operate proposed projects under tribal laws and federal regulations

Job Requirements

  • J.D. preferred with knowledge and/or experience of federal Indian law, administrative law, and  environmental law
  • Prior work experience with tribal governments and/or non-tribal governmental affairs required
  • Ability to travel 5-10 days per month, as required
  • Previous work or education with laws and regulations regarding cultural resources protection and management (NEPA and NHPA)
  • Ability to perform duties in a collaborative, unstructured working environment, strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills, strong analytical and quantitative skills and strong problem-solving skills required
  • Self-starter with strong time management and organizational skills, extreme attention to detail and commitment to producing high quality work product
  • Ability to understand and apply knowledge on a variety of subjects related to the development of energy projects, including legal, finance, transmission, interconnection, permitting, engineering, and public policy
  • Strong preference for experience working with tribes in the Southern Plains (TX, OK, KS)

This position will be based in Juno Beach, FL and will require the ability to travel ~30%. Remote opportunities are also availble with travel to highly qualified candidates.

Job Overview

Employees in this role develop and execute plans for new and enhanced generation projects. This job is responsible for resource allocation, schedules, cost and technical adequacy, ensuring the project or transaction is completed in the most cost-effective and competitive manner. This position manages all aspects of the business deal and ensures the project is completed on time and within budgetary constraints.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Manages all aspects of the day-to-day transaction process to ensure timely completion as well as a cost-effective and competitive result
  • Leads and coordinates key functions such as financial feasibility analyses, engineering/design, project legal review, permitting activities and financial negotiations
  • Responsible for managing multiple and complex projects 
  • Coordinates due diligence activities with other internal groups to ensure proper analysis and structuring of assigned projects
  • Acts as liaison between internal and external specialists regarding procurement, contracting, permitting and interconnection
  • Constructs contractual arrangements for project development
  • Negotiates agreements with consultants and subcontractors
  • Ensures compliance with applicable technical and regulatory requirements
  • Fosters external relationships with customers, third parties and members of the community
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned
