About this position
The part-time lab monitor is responsible for monitoring the central computer help desk in the Rinker Technology Center during second shift. The position is responsible for handling requests for technical assistance by students, faculty and staff and handling such in a timely fashion to provide excellent customer service while under minimal supervision. The typical schedule for this role is Sunday 3pm to 11pm and Monday through Wednesday 5pm to 11pm during the academic year (Fall and Spring terms). The schedule during the summer months is Monday through Friday, 12pm to 5pm.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Respond to requests for technical assistance via phone, email and in-person from all campus constituents such as students, employees and vendors. Including, but not limited to:
    • Referring users to other information sources (handouts, manuals, websites)
    • Providing general help with computer operations and software features
    • Helping with special campus supported software packages
    • Managing password resets as necessary and appropriate
  2. Help campus constituents troubleshoot a variety of technical issues for various hardware and software including but not limited to mobile devices, laptops, computers, Microsoft suite, Adobe suite, and college-specific systems such as email, network, or the Portal.
  3. Document reported issues to communicate to level 2 or 3 technical staff for higher level assistance as needed.
  4. Submit or help user submit technical request tickets for technical issues beyond lab monitors area of expertise.
  5. Develops and maintains positive working relationships with technology staff and communicates relevant information which impacts faculty, staff and students.
  6. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, professional contacts with colleagues, and attending training and/or courses required by the Lab Manager or ITS Director.
  7. Ensures that the knowledge required to provide computer lab support is current by learning new hardware and software capabilities when they become adopted for use by the College.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS
  1. Contact vendors when appropriate for assistance with systems.
  2. Monitor incidents reported to help desk queue to ensure timely completion.
  3. Contributes to the success of the department by performing all other duties as needed to drive the vision, fulfill the mission, and abide by the values of the College.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
  1. High School diploma required
  2. Equivalent work experience required.
  3. Higher Education experience preferred.
  4. Help desk or similar experience preferred.
  5. Demonstrated capability of resolving problems for a variety of customer bases while working under minimal supervision.
  6. Excellent interpersonal, problem solving and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  7. Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and interact with a wide range of users including students, faculty and staff.
  8. Ability to deal with sensitive information with confidentiality and tact is extremely necessary.
  9. Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities as well as be flexible to manage and incorporate change is necessary.
  10. The ability to resolve problems in all phases of systems management while working under minimal supervision.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  1. While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit, walk and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel or operate standard office equipment; reach with hands and arms; and lift up to 25 pounds.
  2. Must have sufficient mobility to connect cables which may require climbing ladders or working under desks.
  3. Must possess visual acuity sufficient for installation and repair of microcomputers and peripherals, as well as to inspect physical facility conditions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  4. Must be able to frequently move freely about campus to deliver materials.
  5. Position may require working long hours at a computer.
  6. Regularly required to work in small spaces for equipment set-up.
