Job description

PLEXIS Healthcare Systems, Inc., a progressive software development company in Medford, OR, is expanding its innovation footprint through our AI Special Ops team — a small, high-impact group focused on experimenting with emerging technologies and building next-generation AI-enabled products.

This is a unique opportunity to work in a startup-like environment within an established healthcare technology company. You’ll help design and deliver intelligent, user-centered software that supports our mission to transform how organizations manage health, benefits, and wellness through data and automation.

Position Summary

As an AI Special Ops Intern, you will work alongside our team on real, in-flight projects rather than throwaway exercises. The department works across several products and initiatives at once, from AI-assisted clinical and claims tooling to internal automation, agentic assistants, and program-management dashboards, and you will get exposure to a range of them.

This is a hands-on role for someone genuinely curious about AI and large language models who also has the discipline to test carefully, document clearly, and ask good questions. You will prototype and evaluate AI features, help turn rough ideas into working tools, keep our research and documentation organized, and learn what it actually takes to apply AI responsibly in a regulated healthcare environment.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Prototype, test, and help evaluate AI / large language model features and agent workflows across the department's products and internal tools
  • Assist with prompt design and the systematic evaluation of model output for quality, accuracy, and reliability
  • Research AI tools, models, and techniques, and write up clear, actionable findings the team can act on
  • Write small scripts and automations (commonly in Python) to streamline repetitive work
  • Help maintain organized research, planning, and reference documentation so knowledge is shared across the team rather than siloed
  • Support program management, including dashboards (React / Vite / Tailwind) and the department data program, with content, data-accuracy passes, and light frontend work
  • Perform quality assurance and verification on AI-generated output, flagging anything that needs a human in the loop before it ships
  • Use AI coding and productivity tools (such as Claude Code) responsibly for day-to-day problem-solving

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field
  • Some programming experience; comfort reading and writing Python is a plus
  • Working familiarity with Git/GitHub, the command line, and Markdown
  • Strong written communication and an eye for clear, organized documentation
  • Detail-oriented and self-directed, comfortable working with ambiguity and willing to ask questions
  • Genuine interest in AI, large language models, and how they get applied to real work

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with an AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, or similar) or with prompt design and evaluation
  • Exposure to React / TypeScript, JSON, YAML, or REST APIs
  • Coursework or projects involving machine learning, NLP, or data analysis
  • Genuine interest in health and wellness applications and a motivation to build technology that improves how care is delivered
  • Awareness of healthcare data handling and privacy expectations (HIPAA); comfort following rules that keep sensitive data out of the wrong places

Compensation & Benefits

  • Paid Internship Hourly Rate: $20.00/hr.
  • Flexible scheduling around academic commitments
  • Mentorship from the AI Special Ops team and direct, practical experience with production AI tooling in a healthcare technology setting

Work Arrangement

Remote and/or Hybrid. Part-time or full-time depending on term and availability.
