Job description
Haverford Township - Parks & Recreation Department
Haverford Township is seeking a mission-driven Part-Time Stewardship Coordinator to help care for our parks, trails, and natural lands while inspiring community members to get involved. This role blends hands-on ecological fieldwork with volunteer leadership, project coordination, and public engagement-perfect for someone who loves being outdoors, values environmental stewardship, and thrives in a collaborative team setting.
This is a part-time position working four days per week, typically 8:00 AM ~ 3:30 PM, for up to 29 hours per week. Attendance at Fall/Spring Planting Days and special programming events is required.
About the Role
The Stewardship Coordinator supports Township-wide open space management and leads volunteer environmental stewardship efforts. This position plays a key role in maintaining healthy natural areas, restoring habitats, and engaging residents in meaningful conservation work. Daily responsibilities range from invasive species removal and trail maintenance to planning volunteer events and implementing site-specific land care plans.
You'll work closely with Park Maintenance, Parks & Recreation, and Public Works staff, and interact regularly with residents, volunteers, and community partners.
What You'll Do
• Carry out park and trail maintenance, invasive species management, hazard mitigation, and watershed
restoration across Township open spaces.
• Install and care for public green infrastructure, including rain gardens, bioswales, riparian buffers, pollinator
gardens, no-mow zones, and "native nooks."
• Implement and update land care plans for Township natural areas.
• Coordinate and support volunteers through Adopt-a-Park/Trail, Haverford Volunteer Corps, and school/corporate
service days.
• Assist with grant writing, project management, budgeting, procurement, planting plans, and GIS mapping.
• Maintain accurate records of stewardship activities, pesticide applications, project monitoring, and grant hours.
• Provide gardening and horticultural support at the CREC.
What You Bring
• Knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm for ecological land care, watershed restoration, conservation planning,
landscaping, and sustainability.
• Bachelor's degree in environmental science, conservation biology, plant science, or related field preferred (not
required).
• At least 2 years of hands-on conservation or land stewardship experience preferred.
• Commitment to safe operation of maintenance equipment (string trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, brush hogs,
utility vehicles, augers, hand tools, etc.) and pesticide application equipment.
• Understanding of and adherence to Integrated Pest Management (IPM) protocols.
• Strong organizational skills to manage maintenance schedules and project timelines.
• Excellent communication skills for community engagement, volunteer coordination, and teamwork.
• Analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Proficiency in GIS, data analysis, and design software.
Supervision & Tools
You'll work under the direction of the Parks & Recreation Director, Assistant Director, Park Maintenance Superintendent, Outdoor Reserve Supervisor, and Staff Horticulturist.
Equipment includes Township vehicles, digital platforms for conservation planning and grant management, pesticide application tools, and standard power/hand tools.
Required Certifications
• PA Public Pesticide Applicator Certification (or willingness to obtain)
• Chainsaw Safety Certification
• Valid PA Driver's License
Physical & Work Environment
This is an active, outdoor-focused role requiring moderate physical exertion, including lifting up to 50 lbs., bending, kneeling, and working on uneven terrain. Work occurs in all weather conditions-heat, cold, mud, snow-and involves travel to various Township sites. Occasional weekend events, including major planting days, are part of the schedule. The position requires patient, positive interaction with the public, volunteers, and partner organizations.
Our Commitment to Inclusion
Haverford Township is committed to equal employment opportunity for all individuals regardless of race, color, religious creed, ancestry, age, sex, national origin, disability, use of support animals, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
