Position Overview
To provide project- based learning and real-world experience to rising Sophomore, Junior, Senior and Graduate students. This cohort experience will provide opportunities to enhance professionalism, gain entry-level investment services experience and receive mentorship from a designated resource within the department.
This is a paid internship opportunity for the Fall 2026 semester. The internship program is designed to be a pipeline for identifying early talent with the goal of converting interns into a part time or full-time role at SECU.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for assigned project-based research and presentation to be shared with leadership at the conclusion of the program.
- Obtain entry-level exposure to the functions of the Tax-Advantaged Solutions department as follows:
- 50% Routine Department Operations: Process standard transactional requests, including basic withdrawals, account conversions, Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs), and automated recurring distributions. Rebalance departmental general ledgers (GLs) daily and resolve rejected system entries or adjustment requests. Complete administrative duties including mailings and imaging documents, and other clerical duties as assigned.
- 20% Transactional Quality Control: Perform routine quality control audits on daily system maintenance logs, newly opened IRA/HSA document images, and missing beneficiary data fields to ensure total compliance.
- 20% Retirement Framework Onboarding: Actively study and cultivate functional working knowledge regarding internal retirement account mechanics (IRAs, TSERs, ORP, NC 401(k), 457, 403(b)) through structured training.
- 10% Regulatory Compliance Training: Dedicate focused effort to understanding IRS codes, compliance regulations, and credit union policies regarding tax-advantaged asset administration and where to retrieve authoritative internal references.
- Collaborate effectively and professionally with internal coworkers and departments across the organization to aid in research and development of project.
Requirements
- Finance, Business, or Accounting-related major preferred.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite, showing specific comfort navigating data entry and basic formulas in Excel.
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Currently enrolled full-time at a US - NC based accredited university/college.
- Must commit to a 12 - 10 week internship program.
- Must commit to at least 10 hours per week.
- GPA of 2.8 or higher.
- Authorized to work in the Unites States without Sponsorship now or in the future or without receiving CPT/OPT through university/college.
- Must be a rising Sophomore, Junior, Senior or Graduate Student.
