Essential Job Functions
  • Compose engaging and informative social media posts
  • Draft and distribute newsletters to various stakeholders
  • Edit and proofread written content for accuracy and consistency
  • Research and gather information for journalistic pieces
  • Conduct interviews and gather quotes for news articles
  • Adhere to journalistic standards and ethics in all written materials
  • Collaborate with the Director of Media and Communications to ensure that all communications related to CAAS, its reputation, messages, and top-priority initiatives are well written, communicated, and promoted.
  • Assist employees throughout the CAAS with strategic communications as assigned.
  • Interact with the CAAS employees most commonly in:
  • Brainstorming sessions to decide the direction of communication projects
  • Conducting interviews serving as a basis for news and feature stories
  • Handling inquiries and final editing negotiations to ensure accuracy and alignment with objectives for published pieces
Qualifications
Minimum Education
A bachelor's degree is required in mass communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
Minimum Experience
A minimum of 5 years of experience as a news reporter in communications, marketing, public relations, or a media environment is required; experience in an academic environment is preferred. An advanced degree is preferred.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer relations, communication, and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Office products, email, and the internet
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, including attention to detail and ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines
  • Ability to write clearly and persuasively on various subjects related to agriculture and applied sciences, using journalistic norms and skills
  • Research and writing experience, both independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to interpret and organize complex information into understandable copy for the average reader
  • Knowledgeable in the use of camera equipment
  • Familiarity with the Associated Press writing style
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience as a writer or editor, with excellent skills in feature/news writing, grammar, editing, copyediting, and proofreading.
