Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences (EMES) and the Institute of Marine Sciences at UNC-CH advances understanding of the earth and ocean processes that govern our planet, shape diverse ecosystems, sustain life, and drive environmental change. Position Summary
In this position, the candidate will operate, maintain, and support the technology infrastructure at Institute Of Marine Sciences (IMS), including computer, communications, servers, lab equipment, and office equipment, facility monitoring, and other technology-based systems as designated. This position will provide technical consultation, support, and training for the research, academic, instructional, and administrative activities. Responsibilities include supporting computer hardware and software systems, operating systems and applications, network infrastructure, cybersecurity, video conferencing platforms, telephone systems, copiers, printers, scanners, fax machines, and other office and laboratory technologies. Additional responsibilities include installing, configuring, and supporting network infrastructure and hardware, including cabling, switches, routers, and related equipment. This position will assist faculty, staff, and students in the effective use of operating systems and technology resources.This position will provide broad technical knowledge across multiple technologies, strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, and the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a wide range of users, vendors, and campus partners. This position will diagnose and repair installed systems where outside support may not be available.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High School or General Educational Development diploma and six months of experience. Equivalent coursework in computer operations or information technology from a technical school or community college may be substituted for the required experience. 
- Journey level requires an additional 6 months of education or experience. 
- Advanced level requires an additional one year of education or experience
Management Preferences
-Knowledge of basic network design, protocols, or limitations
-Knowledge of computer hardware, software, peripherals, telephone and video conferencing systems, or office equipment
-Ability to communicate technical information effectively to users with varying levels of technical expertise. 
-Strong analytical and problem-solving skills 
-Ability to work collaboratively with technical and non-technical personnel
