Job description

Squarespace is looking for a Senior Software Engineer 2 to join the Business Email team, which powers one of our high-growth product areas and plays a critical role in helping entrepreneurs succeed. As part of the Engineering team, you'll build scalable backend systems that support customer-facing email experiences. The team's work spans rearchitecting legacy systems and building new product capabilities across our core Email platform. This is a hybrid role based in our NYC office (3 days per week), reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager of Email.

You'll Get To...
  • Own the design, implementation, and long-term evolution of backend services in Java that support the Email product and integrations.
  • Drive architecture and system design decisions that improve reliability, scalability, performance, and maintainability across the team's systems.
  • Partner closely with Product, Design, QA, DevOps, and peer engineering teams to align requirements, resolve competing priorities, and deliver the best solution for customers and the business.
  • Influence technical direction beyond your immediate team by improving decision-making, communicating standards, and helping shape engineering best practices.
  • Mentor and coach engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and hands-on collaboration, multiplying the effectiveness of the broader team.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, participate in on-call rotations, and advocate for strong observability and operational excellence across the platform.
Who We're Looking For
  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with deep backend expertise and a track record of delivering complex systems in production.
  • Strong proficiency in Java and experience building distributed backend systems and RESTful APIs, ideally using frameworks such as Spring.
  • Experience leading technically ambiguous projects with end-to-end ownership, including defining scope, evaluating feasibility, and driving execution to launch.
  • Strong system design and architectural judgment, with the ability to make sound trade-offs across scale, reliability, and product velocity.
  • Expertise with databases, asynchronous processing, and message-driven systems such as Kafka.
Your team and manager will:
  • Provide opportunities that align with your interests, career growth, and the growth of the company.
  • Create an inclusive environment that's psychologically safe and encourages learning.
  • Work with you to build a personalized career growth plan with clear expectations and milestones.
Benefits & Perks
  • A choice between medical plans with an option for 100% covered premiums
  • Fertility and adoption benefits
  • Access to supplemental insurance plans for additional coverage
  • Headspace mindfulness app subscription
  • Global Employee Assistance Program
  • Retirement benefits with employer match
  • Flexible paid time off
  • 12 weeks paid parental leave and family care leave
  • Pretax commuter benefit
  • Education reimbursement
  • Employee donation match to community organizations
  • 7 Global Employee Resource Groups (ERGs)
  • Dog-friendly workplace
  • Free lunch and snacks
  • Private rooftop
  • Hack week twice per year
Cash Compensation Range: $128,500 - $231,500 USD

The base salary for this position will vary based on job-related criteria including relevant skills, experience, and location, among other factors.

In addition to the cash compensation above (which includes base salary and, where applicable for eligible roles, may include overtime pay), Squarespace employees are eligible to be granted an option to purchase our common stock.
