The New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute provides care to New Mexicans across six different divisions including hospital level inpatient psychiatric care for both civil and forensic commitments, residential treatment for adolescents, outpatient care for people with behavioral health disorders, detox and residential substance use treatment, and skilled/long-term care. As the largest behavioral health complex in the state, inpatient/residential care is provided to over 250 New Mexicans every day, along with 400 outpatient clients a month. There are over 600 employees across all the divisions of NMBHI to ensure high-quality treatment and care is delivered.

Why does the job exist?
The Chief of Medicine oversees the staff providing primary medical care to the patients and residents.
-This position is a supervisory position in which all medical staff report to this person. This position is responsible for ensuring that high quality medical care is provided to all patients and residents.NMBHI provides treatment to individuals with complicated histories of by psychiatric and medical diagnoses.This position works directly with patients and supervises the work of other physicians and nurse practitioners. Many of the patients and residents admitted to NMBHI have not received appropriate medical care prior to admission and this position ensures that appropriate assessments and treatment is provided.This position approves requests for specialist consultations when NMBHI does not have the appropriate specialty in the hospital to provide it.
How does it get done?
-Supervise a team of nurse practitioners and physicians.
-Provided direct care to patients and residents as needed.
-Participate in NMBHI leadership meetings.
-Oversee policies and procedures to ensure that NMBHI is compliant with all state laws and Joint Commission standards. Assist in scheduling providers for unit coverage and an on-call schedule.
-Provide supervision to the NMBHI lab.
Who are the customers?
This position is responsible to monitor all patients and residents' health at NMBHI.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate would have:
-Experience working in a complex hospital system.
-Experience working with individuals with behavioral health disorders.
-Strong leadership characteristics.
-Ability to adjust and change quickly.
-Specialty in family practice or internal medicine preferred, but all specialties encouraged to apply.
-Experience working on an executive leadership team, working closely with hospital administration/CEOs.
Minimum Qualification
Requires a license to practice medicine in New Mexico and Psychiatrist, OB/GYN, Internal Medicine, Family Practice, General Surgery, or Emergency Medicine Board Certification. Must possess an active controlled substance license and DEA registration in New Mexico and six (6) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field above licensure requirements and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required experience.

Working Conditions
This position will work in an office setting with exposure to Visual/ Video Display Terminal, personal computer, and phone usage. The work is in a psychiatric hospital setting with patients who struggle with mental illness and could present with unpredictable behavior.
