Under general supervision of the department manager, shift supervisor or designee, the Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for decontamination, cleaning, processing, and sterilization of instruments in compliance with medical center policies and procedures, state, local and federal requirements.Entity

Job Description
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Sterilizing Service - Collects used instruments from clinics, washes, lubricates and packages instruments appropriately preparatory to sterilizing. Sterilizes packaged instruments appropriately. Returns sterilized instruments in a timely fashion to clinics. Cleans and maintain steam sterilizers and thermal washer/disinfector unit appropriately, including weekly spore testing. Keeps log of instrument loads sterilized and log of weekly spore record, cleaning and maintenance of sterilizers and thermal washer/disinfector. Maintains exam room supplies, instruments, and cleanliness as required by OSHA, MUSCP.
Ensures accurate calibrations, cleaning and scheduled maintenance of clinical/lab equipment as required by OSHA, DHEC and MUSCP; tracked by documentation.
Responsible for participating in in-services supported by MUHA sterile processing and keeping up to date on any changes in process.
Responsible for training any PRN or new staff.
Other duties as assigned.
Job Responsibilities
25% - Sterilizing Service
Success Criteria:
Collects used instruments from clinics, washes, lubricates and packages instruments appropriately preparatory to sterilizing. Sterilizes packaged instruments appropriately. Returns sterilized instruments in a timely fashion to clinics.
25% - Ensures accurate calibrations, cleaning and scheduled maintenance of clinical/lab equipment as required by OSHA, DHEC, and MUSCP.
Success Criteria:
Tracked by documentation of calibration, cleaning, and scheduled maintenance in logs.
25% - Cleans and maintains steam sterilizers and thermal washer/disinfector unit appropriately.
Keeps log of instrument loads sterilized and log of weekly spore record, cleaning and maintenance of sterilizers and thermal washer/disinfector. Maintains supplies, instruments and cleanliness as required by OSHA, MUSCP.
25% - Documentation of each sterilization load, maintenance, and cleaning records.
Spot examination of sterile packages of instruments to insure sterility of contents.
Additional Job Description
Required Minimum Training and Education:
High School diploma or equivalent. Minimum of six (6) months of sterile processing experience, preferably in a hospital or surgical setting.
Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations:
Certification through CRCST - HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) or CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution).
Physical Requirements:
Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
