What are some common challenges faced by Mean Stack developers working remotely, and how can they be overcome?

Mean Stack developers working remotely often face challenges such as collaborating across different time zones, troubleshooting complex technical issues without immediate in-person support, and maintaining focus in a home environment. These can be overcome through regular participation in team meetings, proactive communication using collaboration tools like Slack or Microsoft Teams, and establishing a dedicated workspace to minimize distractions. Leveraging online communities and comprehensive documentation can also help solve technical problems more efficiently. Staying organized and aligned with team goals ensures productivity and smooth project delivery, even when working remotely.

What is a Mean Stack Remote job?

A MEAN Stack Remote job involves developing web applications using the MEAN (MongoDB, Express.js, Angular, and Node.js) stack while working remotely. Developers in this role build and maintain full-stack applications, handling both front-end and back-end tasks. They collaborate with teams using online communication tools and version control systems. This job requires expertise in JavaScript, database management, API integration, and cloud deployment. Remote MEAN stack developers must be self-motivated and proficient in problem-solving to work independently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Mean Stack Remote position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mean Stack Remote developer, you need expertise in JavaScript-based technologies such as MongoDB, Express.js, Angular, and Node.js, as well as a solid understanding of RESTful API design and database management. Familiarity with source control systems like Git, cloud services (e.g., AWS or Azure), and agile development tools is typically required, and certifications in web development can be advantageous. Standout soft skills include strong self-motivation, effective communication, problem-solving abilities, and the discipline to manage time independently in a remote setting. These skills are essential to building scalable, high-quality applications, collaborating effectively with distributed teams, and meeting project deadlines in a fully remote environment.

About SilverStay

At SilverStay, we’re on a mission to be the leading healthcare services company nationwide for complex discharges by 2030. Our team provides solutions for medically and financially complex clients who are failing at home or transitioning out of the healthcare system. Our guideposts of Empathy, Creativity, Collaboration, and Ethical Conduct, while “Wowing” our clients, mean that we’re not just providing solutions, we’re changing healthcare.
Our engineering team is building an AI-powered hospital discharge management platform that replaces the spreadsheets and printed census tools used by case managers today. The platform ingests hospital data, applies AI to surface discharge barriers, assesses patient readiness, and recommends next steps across persona-specific views for care navigation teams. We have multiple active healthcare partners, including Adventist Health and the University of Maryland Medical System, and are continually expanding. It is a HIPAA-regulated environment built on a serverless AWS stack with a Next.js front end.

Role Summary

We are hiring a Software Engineer to step into a dual-focus role split roughly evenly between platform development and AI operations.
On the AI automation side, they will inherit and expand a set of internal workflows, already in development, that use AI to eliminate repetitive, time-consuming work for the internal team: generating call summaries, identifying facility matches, drafting referral and family communications, and producing contract patient summaries.
On the development side, this person will take ownership of the SilverStay platform codebase as the current TR development team completes its engagement and transitions the project out. This is engineering work: you'll be taking ownership of existing pipelines, extending them as new use cases emerge, and owning the end-to-end reliability of workflows the internal team depends on daily.

In practice, this role will start AI ops-heavy. The platform development responsibilities will increase over time as the TR transition completes and the new hire builds familiarity with the codebase — we are not expecting day-one platform ownership.

This is an ideal role for an early-career engineer who wants broad ownership, direct mentorship from a fractional CTO, and exposure to both modern cloud application development and applied AI operations in a regulated healthcare setting.

Key Responsibilities Platform Development (~50%)
  • Take over ongoing maintenance, bug fixes, and feature development of the SilverStay platform following the TR development team's handoff.
  • Work across the stack: Next.js 14+ / React / TypeScript front end and AWS serverless back end (API Gateway, Lambda, RDS/PostgreSQL, S3, Cognito).
  • Deploy and maintain infrastructure using AWS CDK, following established stack standards, tagging requirements, and deployment profiles.
  • Participate in code review, testing, and CI/CD workflows; keep the codebase healthy and well-documented.
  • Contribute to the platform's pluggable analysis engine — adding and tuning AI analysis jobs as new hospital requirements emerge.
AI Operations & Implementation (~50%)

SilverStay's internal team handles a high volume of repetitive, time-sensitive work; qualifying calls, facility placement matching, referral outreach, family communications, contract patient documentation. This half of the role is about building the internal AI-powered workflows that take those tasks off the team's plate.

  • Take ownership of existing AI automation workflows — already built and in use — and maintain, improve, and extend them. Active workflows include: generating structured call summaries from qualifying call recordings; identifying facility matches and auto-drafting referral emails; agentic tracking of referral responses and generating family options emails; producing hospital-specific patient summaries for contract cases where the hospital is the payer.
  • Iterate on and improve existing workflows as team needs evolve — improving output quality, reducing manual review, expanding to new use cases.
  • Build lightweight agentic workflows that can monitor inputs, take action, and loop back for review without requiring step-by-step human instruction.
  • Track AI usage and cost across internal workflows, optimize for prompt efficiency, and flag opportunities for caching or batching.
  • Document every workflow so the practice is repeatable, auditable, and not dependent on a single person.
Required Qualifications
  • 2-5 years of professional software engineering experience
  • Hands-on experience with AWS — comfortable working with core services such as Lambda, API Gateway, RDS/PostgreSQL, S3, or IAM.
  • Proficiency with Next.js and the React / TypeScript ecosystem.
  • Solid programming fundamentals in JavaScript/TypeScript, including version control with Git.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of a codebase with guidance from a fractional CTO rather than a large in-house team.
  • Strong written communication — able to document work clearly for both technical and clinical stakeholders.
  • Comfort working in a regulated environment and following strict data-handling rules (no PHI in logs, least-privilege access, audited actions).
  • Authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Exposure to HIPAA, SOC 2, or other regulated/compliance-driven environments.
  • Experience with AWS CDK or other infrastructure-as-code tooling.
  • Familiarity with AI/LLM tooling — Claude, the Anthropic API, AWS Bedrock, or prompt engineering concepts.
  • Experience with serverless architectures and single-table DynamoDB design.
  • Interest in healthcare technology and improving outcomes for care teams and patients.
  • Experience inheriting and stabilizing a codebase from an outside development team.
What Success Looks Like (First 6 Months)
  • AI automation workflows running cleanly and expanded with at least one new use case
  • TR knowledge transfer complete, with no critical coverage gaps
  • Independent ownership of the deployment pipeline established
  • At least one new hospital configuration or analysis job shipped end to end
