Library Media Assistant

Reports to: Library Media Specialist / Building Administration

  • Job Goal:

    The Library Media Assistant supports the Librarian Media Specialist with overseeing and managing the day-to-day operations of the Library Media Center (LMC) so it is in efficient working order. The Library Media Assistant works with the Library Media Specialist to acquire specialized knowledge relating to various library procedures/programs that support a learner centered school library media program.

    Performance Responsibilities:

    • Process new materials as they become available for circulation, including correctly labeling and documenting in Destiny and evaluating materials for inclusion in the different sections of the library collection following the district and professional library standards.
    • Tag and monitor checkout permissions for students.
    • Organize and reshelve returned items.
    • Mend and clean library materials as needed.
    • Review needs of LMC collection: Looking at series that need to be added. Updating outdated books. Researching currently released books that fit with our library collection policy. Taking student and teacher recommendations; reviewing fit with our library collection policy.
    • Create ordering lists using preferred vendors to be approved and ordered by Library Media Specialists.
    • Order supplies needed to process and maintain all library material.
    • Maintain an accurate, up-to-date library database of all resources cataloged in the system following district standards.
    • Monitor LMC budget throughout the year for final ordering.
    • Perform LMC & bookroom inventories on opposite years.
    • Annually do a Titlewave analysis to review collection and library goals for dated material, diversity stats, average number of books per student and distribution of topics across categories.
    • Weed material that is dated, no longer checked out or not appropriate following our library collection policy.
    • Create displays keeping the LMC orderly and inviting, promoting the LMC collection.
    • Manage the attendance & supervision of Distance Learning Classes when appropriate.
    • Check out, collection and renewal of library materials to patrons.
    • Maintain accurate monthly circulation statistics.
    • Maintain an accurate, up-to-date library database of students and staff.
    • Assist staff and students in locating items in the collection.
    • Train and support students and staff on using Destiny Discover to research books, vetted online resources and collections.
    • Monitor and communicate past dues, sending home to parents of students with long overdue or lost materials and collection of fees if library materials are not returned.
    • Support Teacher requests for collections of curated material to support curriculum needs.
    • Manage Destiny Discover.
    • Monitor & supervise students.
    • Keep Destiny Discover and School Website links up to date.
    • Checkout equipment to staff.
    • Instruct staff in the basic operation of equipment upon request or as necessary.
    • Assist with the management of devices and their documentation used by students/staff on a checkout basis.
    • Work collaboratively with the IT Department.
    • Assist with any special projects that may arise during the school year.
    • Assist with State & District Testing.

    Term of Employment: Nine month
