Position Information
Job Title Veteran Advisor Department LDTC - Financial Aid Employment Status FT Full-Time Full Time/Part Time Full Time Benefits Yes Months per Year 12 Job Description
SUMMARY

The primary function of this position is to assist veterans and their dependents in obtaining all federal and state veteran benefits for which they may be eligible. This position will be located at the Downtown Lubbock Center.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist Veterans and their eligible dependents in the application process for federal and state benefits.
Verify eligibility for veteran benefits and certify courses to the VA using their software.
Verify eligibility for Hazlewood benefits and process awards.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge on federal and state veteran benefit requirements.
Work closely with other departments to ensure all VA requirements are met.
Assist students/parents in person, by email, and by phone.
Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Financial Aid.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

There are no supervisory responsibilities.
LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend complex policies and procedures directives and correspondence pertaining to veteran benefit programs. Ability to adjust current workflow processes to accommodate new procedures pertaining to personnel, technical procedures, and governmental regulations with limited notice. Ability to effectively communicate information in one-to-one and small groups situations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from faculty, students and general public. Ability to write routine job-related correspondence.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, percentages and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to work autonomously, and meet fixed deadlines. Find and correct errors without instruction from supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Associate's degree or higher preferred
High School graduate or equivalent required
Knowledge of VA educational benefits preferred
Previous experience in higher education is desirable.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Personal computer skills including knowledge of current Microsoft Windows Operating Systems and Microsoft Office Suites is required. Must have the ability and desire to learn new software as needed. Word processing and database management skills are a necessity.
