Job description

Job Summary
Season/hours : July through November, approximately 5-10 hours a week. Hours may vary between 8 and 10 hours/week, Monday through Friday. Scheduling is flexible.
Summary : This fellowship offers candidates an opportunity to develop skills relating to field observation and identification of flora and fauna, assessing and describing habitat composition and quality for native birdlife, and bird conservation.
The intern will be supervised and mentored by the EIC's Natural Areas Manager.
Responsibilities*
  • Conduct biological surveys in minimally managed landscapes on the UM-Dearborn campus, focusing on describing current conditions that support birdlife.
  • Use information gathered through these assessments to create a Habitat Management Guide that includes recommendations for managing the habitats mentioned above, with a focus on improving resources for native birds.
  • Research and help install a cost-effective bird collision deterrent film onto the EIC building windows.

Required Qualifications*
  • Current UM-Dearborn student or very recent graduate
  • Background coursework in field biology and/or field ecology
  • Appropriate level of familiarity with the techniques of field observation and identification of local flora and native birdlife
  • Basic knowledge of ecological processes and concepts
  • Interest in birds and bird conservation
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Comfortable doing field work
  • Organized and self-directed
  • Ability to work independently

Desired Qualifications*
  • Familiar with EIC mission and goals.
  • Formally trained using a diversity of ArcGIS software programs and apps.
  • Ability to receive and integrate feedback from staff and visitors into map design and goals.
  • Ability to work independently and solve technical problems.
