Job description

2nd Shift, Weld Engineer

Body Assembly

Outline of duties: 

The Weld Engineer develops and optimizes production processes and equipment to achieve the safety, quality, output, and cost goals of the organization. Collects production data and applies scientific and statistical methods to analyze, document, and diagram production processes. A process engineer is responsible for identifying production problems and likewise identifying methods for resolution. They recommend and implement changes to equipment, work methods and other aspects of production to improve the utilization of all relevant resources. The SIA Welding Engineer will also apply their knowledge of welding processes, procedures and equipment to the manufacturing welding processes within the SIA Body Assembly Shop.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Support production by responding to weld quality issues that arise such as weld peel, pin holes, dents, burrs, spatter, mislocated welds, missing welds, IPC weld destruct, etc.
  • Study areas or processes affecting quality adversely and implement ways to improve the process, such as design spatter guards, tip dressers, test equipment.  Implement and maintain spatter reduction programs.
  • Coordinate NDT weld testing program including training, new equipment investigation and implementation.  Assist IPC with quality issues as well as NDT equipment and techniques. 
  • Develop welding conditions for use on new models as well as improve weld on existing models. 
  • Respond to any ergonomic or safety issues involved with spot welding, wire welding and grinding. 
  • Cost reductions studies and trials involving welding consumables, i.e., welding tips, shanks, blades, dressers, cables, etc.
  • Investigate and trial new products and new technology involved with welding into the Body shop.
  • Assist management with obtaining current information pertaining to the world of welding technologies including new materials and techniques to keep SIA aware of current technology.
  • Support SRD and Manufacturing Engineering with performing trials on various models and subassemblies to determine root cause and assist in developing countermeasures. 
  • Create training materials, documentation and aids including videos and written text to train Associates and interns that benefit both the student and SIA. 
  • All other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering Technology, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of relevant experience and education
  • Robotic Welding exposure in a manufacturing setting.
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Experience using 3D Software (CAD, SolidWorks, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering Technology, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field plus 5 years relevant experience
  • 3+ years' experience in a high-volume industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Automotive industry experience and vehicle body assembly experience is a plus.
  • Experience in an automated industrial manufacturing environment with exposure to robotics, automated material handling systems, and communication networks.
  • Working understanding of quality fundamentals, basic measurement methods, and statistical process control (SPC).
