IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:Director of Special Education
FLSA STATUS:Exempt
EMPLOYMENT TERM: Minimum 220 days annually
SALARY:Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-2, in accordance with Upshur County Teacher Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level
EVALUATION:Performance in this position will be evaluated by the immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310, and UCBOE Policy 5010
JOB SUMMARY: The School Psychologist(s) primary goal is to assist students to reach their academic, social, emotional, and physical potentials either through direct assessment or therapy with the student(s) or indirect interventions when working with teachers and parents.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide diagnostic services in the area of intelligence, personality, sensory motor, achievement, and adaptive behavior, and behavior to students with suspected exceptional educational needs.
- Provide alternative intervention strategies and/or assessments to students with non-exceptional educational needs.
- Consult with parents of students who have been formally evaluated about educational interventions and/or management strategies that can be utilized at home and at school o assist the child to reach his/her full potential.
- Report test data and observations for students who have been referred to assist the IEP team in identifying various disabilities along with helping to determine the need for special education.
- Coordinate IEP, 504, and SAT meetings when appropriate. Duties may include scheduling the meetings with the teachers, specialists and parents, facilitating the communication at the meetings, completing the mandated procedures and filing the final report.
- Provide direct individual and group counseling services to students who are experiencing academic, social, emotional or behavioral adjustment problems.
- Collaborate/consult with individual teachers regarding learning or behavioral concerns about students.? Assist the teacher in establishing behavioral management programs and/or classroom modifications to accommodate the learning needs of their students.
- Teach individual parents or organize group presentations on specific strategies or techniques to assist the parent in the successful management of their child.
- Serve as a consultant to the Student Assistant Team (SAT) to provide pre-referral intervention alternatives.
- Collaborate with school, community, county, state and federal resources and agencies to assist students with special needs.
- Other responsibilities related to the position as assigned by the Director of Special Education.
- Maintains open lines of communication with the special education director, principals, teachers, parents and outside agencies.
- Provides on-site technical assistance to schools' Student Assistance Teams (SAT) regarding intervention planning and appropriate referrals.
- Maintains appropriate data, records and documentation relative to current functioning levels, student progress and other pertinent information in an organized and confidential manner.
- Assists school teams with interpreting multi-disciplinary assessment results.
- Reevaluates students, when necessary, to determine the extent of progress and effectiveness of instruction.
- Seeks Medicaid reimbursement for evaluations conducted on children who are Medicaid eligible.
- Provides professional learning opportunities to teachers, support staff, parents and other personnel, as appropriate.
- Assists with the monitoring and documentation of the special education monitoring process
- Monitors and coordinates the assessment of students. Ensures that the assessment process is completed within the mandated timelines delineated in WV State Board of Education Policy 2419.
- Supervises school psychologist interns, as directed.
- Coordinates positive behavior support programs in schools and assists with the creation of positive behavior support plans.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Meet minimum Standards for Certification as set forth by the West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5202 in Minimum Requirements for the Licensure of Professional Personnel - Student Support Certificate.
• Valid West Virginia certification as a school psychologist at grade levels commensurate with an assignment to gradesK-12.
• Experience in special education at the early childhood, middle childhood and adolescent levels.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Knowledgeable in special education law, policies and procedures.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people.
• Competency with using technology.
