What is the difference between Internship Raman Spectroscopy vs Research Assistant Raman Spectroscopy?

AspectInternship Raman SpectroscopyResearch Assistant Raman Spectroscopy
CredentialsEnrolled in undergraduate or graduate programMaster's or PhD preferred, relevant coursework
Work EnvironmentLaboratory, academic or industrial settingsResearch labs, universities, or industry research centers
ResponsibilitiesAssisting with experiments, data collection, learning techniquesDesigning experiments, analyzing data, publishing results

Internship Raman Spectroscopy typically involves learning and supporting ongoing research under supervision, while Research Assistant Raman Spectroscopy entails more independent research responsibilities and advanced analysis. Both roles are vital in the industry and academia, but differ in experience level and scope.

What is an Internship in Raman Spectroscopy?

An Internship in Raman Spectroscopy is a temporary training position where students or recent graduates work with scientists or engineers to learn about and gain hands-on experience with Raman spectroscopy. Raman spectroscopy is a technique used to study the vibrational, rotational, and other low-frequency modes in a system, often to identify chemical compounds or analyze material properties. Interns typically assist with sample preparation, instrument operation, data collection, and analysis. This role helps interns develop technical skills and gain exposure to research or industrial applications of spectroscopy.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a Raman Spectroscopy internship?

As a Raman Spectroscopy intern, you will typically assist with sample preparation, instrument calibration, and the collection and analysis of spectral data. You may work closely with senior scientists to support ongoing research projects, troubleshoot experimental setups, and contribute to the interpretation of results. Collaboration with team members from chemistry, physics, or materials science backgrounds is common, and you'll gain hands-on experience with laboratory equipment and data analysis software. This role offers valuable exposure to both experimental techniques and real-world applications of spectroscopy in industrial or academic settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Raman Spectroscopy, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Internship in Raman Spectroscopy, candidates typically need a background in chemistry, physics, or materials science and a solid understanding of spectroscopy principles. Familiarity with Raman spectrometers, data analysis software (such as Origin or MATLAB), and laboratory safety protocols is often required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns excel in both independent research and collaborative projects. These competencies are crucial for accurately collecting, interpreting, and presenting spectral data, ensuring valuable contributions to research teams.

Job description

About Pendar Technologies
Pendar Technologies is a small, growing high-tech company that is advancing the field of intelligent chemical analysis. Leveraging advanced Raman laser spectroscopy and robust detection algorithms, our flagship product, the Pendar X10, represents the forefront of opto-mechanical innovation in hazardous material identification, which we manufacture onsite. Our innovative solutions assist first responders, law enforcement, and military personnel in identifying the chemicals they encounter in the field. Join Pendar to become part of a place that's developing cutting-edge technology and is making a significant impact safeguarding our country and communities.
About the Role
Pendar Technologies is seeking a R&D Engineer to support the development, testing, and improvement of advanced optical sensing systems. This role is highly hands-on and spans research, product development, and manufacturing support. You will work across multiple domains including materials (e.g., surface cleaning, adhesives), system reliability, automation, and environmental testing.
This is an ideal role for an engineer who enjoys building, experimenting, and solving real-world hardware problems in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Support the design, execution, and analysis of engineering experiments under the guidance of senior R&D team members. Areas of focus include surface cleaning and preparation, adhesive selection, material characterization, optical and thermal curing processes, assembly manufacturability and repeatability, and statistical analysis of manufacturing process data.
  • Build and evaluate physical prototypes to validate new design concepts and assess assembly methods, precision optomechanical alignment procedures, and manufacturing processes.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of environmental and reliability testing methods based on standards such as MIL-STD-810, including temperature cycling, thermal shock, humidity exposure, mechanical shock and vibration, electromagnetic susceptibility, and altitude testing.
  • Collect, analyze, and present performance and reliability data generated from prototypes and test systems operating under a variety of environmental and stress conditions.
  • Investigate product and process failures, perform root cause analysis, and support corrective action implementation.
  • Design, build, improve, and maintain engineering test equipment, manufacturing fixtures, and experimental setups.
  • Take a leading role in early-stage product testing, performance evaluation, and quality assessment activities.
  • Collaborate closely with manufacturing, quality, and engineering teams to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve product and process issues.

Qualifications
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related Engineering field
  • 1-3 years of experience (internships or research experience included)
  • Strong hands-on skills in mechanical assembly, soldering, PCB prototyping, familiarity with machine shop tools and 3D printing.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills are required for recording and sharing SOPs and test results with other engineers

Nice to Have
  • Familiarity with data analysis software tools (Python, MATLAB, MINITAB, etc.)
  • Exposure to standard manufacturing engineering practices.

Location and Additional Information
  • This is a full-time position, fully on-site in Cambridge, MA, accessible by car, bike, and bus
  • Salary range of $80,000 to $100,000 depending on the candidate
  • Competitive benefits include healthcare, dental, vision, and matching 401k
