What is an Internship in QGIS?

An Internship in QGIS is a temporary position where students or recent graduates gain practical experience in using QGIS, a free and open-source geographic information system for mapping and spatial analysis. Interns work on real-world projects involving spatial data, map creation, and analysis under the guidance of professionals. This internship helps individuals develop technical skills in GIS, understand spatial data management, and improve their employability in fields such as urban planning, environmental science, and geography.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Intern using QGIS, and why are they important?

To thrive as a QGIS Intern, you should have a foundational understanding of GIS concepts, spatial data analysis, and mapping, ideally supported by coursework or a related degree in geography, environmental science, or urban planning. Familiarity with QGIS software, basic data management, and possibly other GIS tools like ArcGIS or Python scripting is often required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help interns collaborate on projects and convey spatial insights clearly. These skills and qualifications are crucial for producing accurate geospatial analyses and supporting organizational decision-making.

What is the difference between Internship Qgis vs GIS Technician?

Internship Qgis is an entry-level, learning-focused position for students or recent graduates gaining hands-on experience with QGIS software. In contrast, a GIS Technician is a full-time professional role requiring more experience and responsibilities in managing GIS data and projects. Both roles are common in GIS-related industries, but internships serve as a stepping stone toward a career as a GIS Technician.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a QGIS internship?

As a QGIS intern, you will typically work on projects involving spatial data collection, analysis, and mapping using the QGIS platform. Your daily tasks may include digitizing geographic features, cleaning and organizing data layers, creating thematic maps, and assisting with spatial analysis under the supervision of senior GIS professionals. You may also collaborate with team members from fields like urban planning, environmental science, or engineering to support ongoing projects. This hands-on experience helps you build technical proficiency in QGIS and gain insight into its applications in real-world scenarios.

As a Transportation Engineer or Planner with 2-4 years of experience, you are building on a strong technical foundation and beginning to take on greater ownership in your work. This role represents an important step in your career-where you move from primarily executing tasks to helping shape project approaches, leading efforts, and mentoring others.

You'll work on a wide range of planning and engineering projects, developing both your technical expertise and your ability to manage projects, support clients, and contribute to the success of your team. Along the way, you'll be supported by a collaborative culture that values mentorship, encourages initiative, and empowers you to grow into a strong project manager.

Project Experience May Include:

  • Bicycle and pedestrian planning
  • Access, circulation, and parking studies
  • Multimodal operations assessments
  • Complete streets planning, operations, and design
  • Transit forecasting and operations
  • Travel behavior forecasting
  • Vehicle miles of travel (VMT) assessments
  • Systemic safety studies
  • Corridor and interchange studies
  • Climate action plans
  • Freight planning and TDM strategies
  • Conceptual through final design (e.g., bikeways, signals, signing and striping, roundabouts, lighting, temporary traffic control)
Responsibilities
  • Lead tasks and manage projects, including coordinating scope, schedule, and budget
  • Apply standard and intermediate analytical techniques independently, with appropriate guidance
  • Contribute to project approaches, problem-solving, and decision-making
  • Prepare clear, well-organized technical reports, memos, and presentations
  • Participate in and lead client meetings and support relationship development
  • Mentor entry-level staff and interns, including delegating, reviewing work and providing guidance
  • Assist with proposal efforts and business development initiatives
  • Balance multiple assignments while managing your own workload effectively
  • Conduct site visits and field data collection as needed
Growth & Development

In this role, you can expect to:

  • Take increasing ownership of your work and understand how it contributes to overall project success
  • Strengthen your project management skills by leading smaller efforts and coordinating with team members
  • Develop confidence in communicating technical concepts to clients, stakeholders, and the public
  • Build mentoring and delegation skills as you support junior staff
  • Begin developing an area of technical expertise while continuing to expand your overall skillset
  • Explore new tools and ideas through our internal Research and Development program
Qualifications
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience in transportation planning or engineering
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in transportation, civil or electrical engineering, urban and regional planning, or a related field (e.g., geography, math, statistics, economics)
  • Experience applying transportation analysis techniques with increasing independence
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas (experience in all is not required): transportation planning, traffic engineering, transportation design (conceptual through PS&E), complete streets,  traffic operations analysis,  or travel demand modeling
  • Familiarity with relevant software (experience with all is not required):
      • General: Microsoft Excel, GIS (ArcGIS, QGIS), CAD (AutoCAD, MicroStation)
      • Traffic Operations: HCS, Synchro/SimTraffic, Vistro, VISSIM, Sidra

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • A proactive, entrepreneurial mindset and willingness to take initiative
  • Interest in mentoring others and contributing to a collaborative team environment
