We are seeking an entry-level Actuarial Analyst to join our team. This role is designed for early-career actuaries with strong analytical capabilities and a desire to grow within the actuarial profession.

The Actuarial Analyst will support a variety of actuarial functions-including trend analysis, supporting forecasting process, and reporting-while developing technical, analytical, and business knowledge across healthcare analytics. This role provides foundational experience in applying actuarial principles to real-world healthcare data and business challenges.

*This position requires you to work onsite 4 days a week at the Optum corporate office located at:  1 OPTUM CIR, Eden Prairie, MN 55344.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Data & Analytical Work
    • Perform data extraction, validation, and analysis using tools such as SQL, SAS, Excel, or similar platforms
    • Review data, models, and reports for reasonableness, consistency, and completeness
    • Develop and maintain standard actuarial reports and models
    • Conduct routine analyses using established methodologies and processes
  • Reporting & Deliverables
    • Prepare recurring reporting (e.g., monthly, quarterly) accurately and on time
    • Populate actuarial models and validate control totals
    • Support forecasting, reserving, and trend analyses (role-dependent)
    • Assist in investigating variances and identifying key drivers of results
  • Communication & Collaboration
    • Communicate analysis results, findings, and issues to manager and team
    • Provide clear summaries and insights for assigned work
    • Participate in team discussions and contribute thoughtful questions
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve data or analytical issues
  • Task & Project Management
    • Execute routine and recurring tasks independently once trained
    • Manage deadlines and communicate progress or risks proactively
    • Work with manager to prioritize assignments and study time
    • Follow established processes and document work appropriately

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, or a related field
  • Successful completion of at least one actuarial exam (2-3 preferred)
  • Progression in the Actuarial Education Program (commitment to exams required)
  • 1 years of relevant experience (internship or analytical experience preferred)
  • Foundational knowledge of SQL and/or VBA (ability to modify existing code)
  • Proven solid Excel skills (formulas, data manipulation, formatting)
  • Proven ability to work with large datasets and perform data validation checks

Preferred Qualification:

  • Proven exposure to tools such as Power BI, PowerPivot, or SAS

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $60,200 to $107,400 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
