Position Summary:
The primary purpose of a graduate assistantship is to promote the student's successful completion of an academic program while giving them experience working in an academic environment. Graduate assistantships support the University's teaching, research and service missions for the benefit of students in areas closely related to their chosen field of study.
There are three types of graduate assistantships at A-State: Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTA); Graduate Research Assistants (GRA); and Graduate Administrative Support Assistants (GSA).
This graduate assistantship works within the University's student-led security operations center (SOC) to enhance the institution's security monitoring, incident response, and security awareness capabilities. This SOC is designed to develop a skilled cybersecurity workforce, support institutional security objectives, and provide real-world operational experience using enterprise-grade security tools.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Please note that assigned duties may vary at the discretion of the SOC Coordinator. On the job training will be utilized remedy any lack of experience and open additional duties and responsibilities.
Security Operations Center Duties
-Creation and management of security related tickets.
-Monitoring endpoint vulnerabilities and recommending remediation timelines in alignment with IT Security procedures.
-Auditing endpoint configuration compliance with institutional baselines and suggesting remediation tasks.
-Monitoring endpoint detections and reviewing historical detections to ensure gaps are addressed.
-Remediation of email-based security incidents.
-Perform other duties as assigned related to SOC initiatives.
Communication & Documentation
-Creation and management of security documentation such as procedures and standards.
-Attend and contribute to security meetings.
-Attend and contribute to on-site training sessions.
Projects & Research
-Contribute to semester-long project(s) such as the implementation & configuration of Microsoft Defender.
-Research modern security practices and developing security incidents to provide actionable information and suggestions to the IT Security team.
Mentorship & Guidance
-Provide meaningful support to SOC interns alongside the SOC Coordinator.
-Receive valuable experience and guidance on security related topics and skills.
Program Development
Student analysts are provided with the unique opportunity to help shape the direction of the student-led SOC for the following semester. Within this program, student input and feedback are core components of what makes this SOC student led. Over the course of the semester, GA recommendations build the following semester's program structure.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• Strong computer skills and good oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to follow instructions and complete assigned tasks and adhere to assigned work schedule.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a group setting.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information responsibly.
General Days/Hours:
Graduate Assistants are expected to work an average of 20 hours a week. Regular and Reliable Attendance.

This application will only be considered for the term selected on page one and should be submitted directly to the department that has the desired Graduate Assistant position. A new application form must be submitted for each new period that an assistantship is desired.
The Master and Specialist assistantships will have a maximum time limit of five semesters. An exception is made for students admitted based on a Bachelor's Degree rather than a Master's Degree to the Ed.S. in Psychology and Counseling; these students will have a maximum time limit of eight semesters. Doctoral assistantships will have a maximum time limit of eight semesters. Two summer terms of five weeks each will count as one semester in all programs.
Some departments may request additional information such as a resume and/or a potential work schedule. Please contact the department directly to see if they require the submission of any additional documentation with the GA Application.
Master Graduate Assistants will receive instate tuition, and Doctoral Graduate Assistants receive a full tuition waiver. The Credit Hour and GPA requirement must be met, and a waiver form must be filled out in Student Accounts in order to receive the appropriate tuition adjustment.
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduate Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on graduate work in order to be eligible for a Graduate Assistant position.
Master and Specialist GAs must complete a minimum of six hours of graduate credit during a regular semester. Their total credit hours (graduate and undergraduate) cannot exceed 12. Three graduate credit hours are required in the combined summer terms in order to hold a GA position in any summer term. Total summer credit hours may not exceed seven per summer term.
Doctoral GAs are required to take a minimum of nine credit hours during the regular semester and three credit hours during each summer term an assistantship is held. ASU's system currently does not update to reflect the full-time status of GAs who meet these registration requirements. Please contact Human Resources if validation of full-time status is needed.
The ability to pass a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) background check and obtain CJIS clearance.
