The IUSM is the largest medical school in the country, and the iconic Bloomington campus is the second largest IUSM campus. It currently hosts over 100 medical students across all four years of the Doctor of Medicine program, two PhD programs, an undergraduate (baccalaureate) footprint, and a robust clinical and translational research program. The campus will enter the 2026 Match as a new IUSM graduate medical training site, with residencies in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine.
The new residency will be housed at the Bloomington Regional Academic Medical Center, which includes the IU-Bloomington Health Sciences Building and IU Health Bloomington Hospital, a 350+ bed level 3 trauma center and level 2 NICU, with an approximately 60K per year ED census. IU Health is the largest health system in the state of Indiana, and the South Region will serve as the foundation for the EM residency. Resident training opportunities are available at all four of the hospitals in the region, as well as multiple outpatient sites in the region, which have served as educational sites for medical students for decades. In addition, the integrated IU Health network across the state allows for elective opportunity for residents to experience both community and academic practices in diverse communities such as Indianapolis, West Lafayette, Muncie and Ft. Wayne. All physicians in the unified IU Health Medical Group hold faculty positions with the IUSM, and medical education is core to the mission of the health system.
The IUSM-Bloomington enjoys its position in the heart of Bloomington, Indiana, and has been embedded within the flagship IU campus for over 120 years. The IU-Bloomington community is excited by collaborative research opportunities, and outreach to the graduate and undergraduate student populations. The campus enjoys not only world class music associated with the Jacobs School, world class business education with the Kelley School, and the nation's top School of Public and Environmental Affairs, but also a fun and enthusiastic athletics scene.
