What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Independent Contractor Firefighter, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Firefighter, you need thorough knowledge of fire suppression, emergency medical response, and safety protocols, typically validated by firefighter certification and EMT qualifications. Familiarity with firefighting tools, communication systems, and safety equipment is essential, along with up-to-date training in hazardous materials and rescue operations. Strong decision-making, physical fitness, teamwork, and effective communication are vital soft skills for managing high-pressure situations. These competencies are crucial for ensuring personal safety, effective emergency response, and the protection of lives and property in unpredictable environments.

What are some common challenges faced by independent contractor firefighters compared to those in traditional fire departments?

Independent contractor firefighters often face unique challenges, such as securing consistent contracts and adapting to varying protocols across different organizations or jurisdictions. Unlike traditional fire department employees, independent contractors are responsible for their own equipment, certifications, and insurance, which adds extra administrative and financial responsibilities. Additionally, they may need to quickly integrate into new teams and adapt to diverse work environments with each assignment, requiring strong communication and adaptability skills.

What are independent contractor firefighters?

Independent contractor firefighters are professionals who provide firefighting services on a contract basis rather than as employees of a fire department or municipality. They may work for private companies, government agencies, or organizations that require fire safety and emergency response services, such as construction sites, industrial facilities, or remote locations. Unlike traditional firefighters, independent contractors are responsible for managing their own business operations, including insurance, taxes, and equipment. This role offers flexibility but may also lack the benefits and job security provided by full-time employment with a fire department.

About Mermaid AI

Mermaid AI is redefining radio communications through artificial intelligence. Our platform enhances traditional radio systems used by fire departments, police departments, and public safety agencies-bringing powerful AI capabilities into environments that have remained largely unchanged for decades. This is an opportunity to represent a breakthrough technology with real-world impact on safety, response times, and operational awareness.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a driven, self-starting Independent Sales Representative to take Mermaid AI directly into the field-meeting with firehouses, police departments, and decision-makers to demonstrate and sell our technology. This is not a desk job. This is a boots-on-the-ground, relationship-driven role where you will be in front of real users, solving real problems. If you're someone who thrives on independence, believes in what you're selling, and wants uncapped income potential-this role is built for you.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Visit firehouses, police departments, and public safety facilities to introduce Mermaid AI
  • Conduct live, in-person demonstrations of our AI-powered radio solution
  • Build relationships with chiefs, officers, and municipal decision-makers
  • Identify opportunities and move deals through the full sales cycle
  • Attend regional events, trainings, and industry meetups
  • Act as the face of Mermaid AI in your territory
  • Provide real-world feedback to help shape product evolution

Compensation & Perks

  • Highly generous commission structure (uncapped earnings)
  • All travel expenses fully covered (transportation, hotels, meals)
  • Early-stage opportunity with significant upside
  • Sell a product with a clear, compelling value proposition

Who You Are

  • A self-motivated closer who doesn't need a base salary to perform
  • Comfortable walking into a firehouse or police department and starting a conversation
  • Strong communicator who can translate technical innovation into real-world value
  • Organized and disciplined in managing your own pipeline
  • Excited about selling a new category of AI technology

Preferred Experience (Not Required, but a big plus)

  • Background in:
    • Public safety (firefighter, police, EMS)
    • Radio communications, RF, or telecom
    • Government / municipal sales
  • Experience with in-person, field-based sales
  • Familiarity with how public agencies evaluate and purchase equipment

What Makes This Different

  • You're not selling a commodity-you're introducing something new and meaningful
  • You'll be speaking directly with end users who immediately understand the value
  • No corporate red tape-just you, the product, and the opportunity to win
