Job description

Job Title: Senior Payroll Support

Location: Houston, TX, 77002

Duration: 4 Months Contract (Potential Temp-to-Hire)


I. Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Senior Payroll Support Specialist is responsible for independently executing accurate and timely payroll processing. This role handles complex payroll issues and supports end-to-end payroll operations, ensuring compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate brings strong analytical skills and deep experience in large-scale, multi-state payroll environments.


II. Key Responsibilities

Payroll Processing & Operations

  • Execute full end-to-end on-cycle payroll processing (weekly and biweekly) for approximately 60,000 U.S. multi-state employees (salaried and hourly).
  • Perform payroll validation, reconciliation, HSDL loads, special transactions, third-party files, and funding activities.
  • Process regular and mass off-cycle payrolls, ensuring accuracy, approvals, and adherence to payroll schedules.
  • Handle payroll banking transactions such as stop payments, direct deposit rejections, and reversals, ensuring prompt resolution.

Data Analysis & Reporting

  • Generate, format, and analyze payroll reports to validate data accuracy and identify discrepancies.
  • Support payroll reconciliation processes and audit activities through detailed reporting and insights.

Issue Resolution & Support

  • Research and resolve payroll inquiries accurately and within defined service levels.
  • Address complex payroll issues while ensuring compliance with policies and legal requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal payroll teams and cross-functional stakeholders to meet service commitments.

Vendor & Stakeholder Coordination

  • Engage with third-party vendors and suppliers to resolve payroll-related issues and ensure timely processing.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with HR, Finance, and other departments.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify and recommend process improvements related to payroll controls, reconciliation, efficiency, and accuracy.
  • Support implementation of best practices and operational enhancements.

Confidentiality

  • Handle sensitive employee payroll data, including garnishments and court orders, with strict confidentiality.
  • Follow established security protocols and exercise discretion in data handling and communication.

III. Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Accounting, Human Resources, or related field; OR
    • High School Diploma/GED with 4+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 5+ years of multi-state payroll experience
    • Minimum 3+ years of Oracle HCM Cloud experience

Certifications (Preferred)

  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP)
  • Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC)
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP)

IV. Required Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of large-scale payroll processing and compliance requirements
  • Advanced Excel skills (VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, data analysis)
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • Oracle HCM Cloud
    • ServiceNow
    • UKG Timekeeper
    • Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking abilities
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • High level of integrity and ability to handle confidential information

V. Work Environment

  • Office-based role in Houston, TX
  • Frequent use of computer and keyboard for extended periods
  • Occasional lifting of items less than 30 pounds
  • Standard professional office setting
