Summary Under the general direction of designated Jail Administration (e.g., Lieutenant or Program Supervisor), the GED Instructor/Educator is responsible for planning, delivering, and administering a comprehensive General Educational Development (GED) program for incarcerated adults

This position provides classroom and individualized instruction to male and female inmates, prepares students for GED testing, oversees testing activities, and ensures compliance with Texas Education Agency (TEA) and Pearson GED requirements. The instructor is accountable for student progress, timely advancement to testing, accurate recordkeeping, and overall program effectiveness. Individuals in this position serve at the pleasure of the current elected official.

Responsibilities Responsibilities Plans, develops, and delivers GED curriculum aligned with TEA standards and Pearson GED testing requirements. Provides classroom and individualized instruction in GED subject areas, including mathematics, language arts, social studies, and science. Assesses student academic levels and develops instructional strategies to accelerate readiness for GED testing.

Prepares students for official GED testing and oversees administration of practice exams and official GED exams. Coordinates class schedules and testing logistics in collaboration with jail administration and custody staff. Maintains accurate records of attendance, instructional hours, coursework, assessments, testing results, and student progress.

Communicates regularly with jail leadership regarding student participation, progress, barriers, and outcomes. Ensures compliance with TEA, Pearson GED, and facility security requirements. Orders, maintains, and inventories instructional materials, testing supplies, and educational resources.

Provides academic counseling and encouragement to support student engagement and completion. Maintains professional classroom control and adheres to jail safety and security protocols at all times. Attends required meetings, trainings, and professional development activities.

Performs other related duties as assigned. Education and/or Experience Education and/or Experience Bachelor's degree in Education or a closely related field from an accredited college or university Minimum one (1) year of teaching experience; experience teaching adult learners preferred. Any combination of experience or education may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Other Qualifications, Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Other Qualifications, Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Class C TX driver's license. Texas Teacher Certification preferred. Experience teaching in correctional, alternative education, or adult education programs preferred.

Familiarity with Pearson GED software preferred. Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
