Freelance Structural Engineering information

What is a Freelance Structural Engineering job?

A Freelance Structural Engineering job involves providing structural analysis, design, and consultation services on a contract basis rather than as a full-time employee. Freelancers work with architects, contractors, and clients to ensure buildings and infrastructure are safe and meet regulatory standards. They may handle tasks like load calculations, material selection, and structural inspections. This role offers flexibility in workload and project choice but requires strong technical expertise and business management skills.

What are common challenges faced by freelance structural engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Freelance structural engineers often juggle multiple projects and clients simultaneously, which requires excellent time management and organizational skills. A common challenge is ensuring steady workflow and maintaining consistent communication with clients, architects, and contractors who may have differing expectations and timelines. To address these issues, successful freelancers proactively set clear project milestones, utilize effective project management tools, and establish transparent communication channels from the outset. Building a reliable network of contacts and constantly updating technical knowledge also helps in delivering quality work and securing repeat business. By staying organized and adaptable, freelance structural engineers can manage these challenges and achieve professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Freelance Structural Engineering position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Structural Engineer, you need a solid background in structural analysis, design principles, and a degree in civil or structural engineering, often with PE (Professional Engineer) licensure. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, SAP2000, ETABS, and Revit is typically required, along with up-to-date knowledge of local building codes and regulations. Strong project management, client communication, and problem-solving abilities help set successful freelancers apart. These competencies are vital because freelancers must deliver safe, compliant designs independently while effectively managing clients and projects from start to finish.

Position Summary

Loud & Live is seeking an experienced and highly creative Director of Experiential Fabrication to lead the design-build execution of immersive environments, live event installations, festival infrastructure, scenic fabrication, branded experiences, and custom venue builds.

This role is ideal for a hands-on builder and operational leader with a unique blend of experience across entertainment production, theatrical/set construction, experiential fabrication, touring environments, and commercial construction. The ideal candidate thinks like a creative producer, executes like a general contractor, and leads like a shop foreman.

The Director will oversee construction logistics, scenic builds, fabrication teams, warehouse/shop operations, installation crews, vendor coordination, and project execution from concept through completion. This role will work closely with creative, production, operations, and executive leadership to bring large-scale experiences and environments to life safely, efficiently, and at the highest standard of quality.

Key Responsibilities

Scenic Construction & Experiential Development

  • Lead the construction and fabrication of stages, scenic environments, branded activations, themed installations, temporary structures, VIP experiences, and event infrastructure
  • Translate creative concepts, renderings, and production designs into executable build plans and physical environments
  • Oversee custom fabrication projects including carpentry, scenic finishing, metalwork, millwork, signage, lighting integration, and structural installations
  • Collaborate with creative teams, production designers, architects, engineers, and vendors to ensure builds meet both creative vision and operational feasibility
  • Develop innovative construction approaches for immersive and non-traditional event environments

Shop & Fabrication Leadership

  • Manage fabrication shop operations including build schedules, staffing, inventory, equipment, workflow, and safety compliance
  • Lead and mentor carpenters, fabricators, painters, installers, freelance crews, and technical labor teams
  • Build and maintain a scalable network of freelance and specialty trades for large-scale projects and event builds
  • Establish SOPs, quality standards, and operational systems for construction and fabrication workflows
  • Ensure proper maintenance and organization of tools, materials, equipment, and warehouse assets

Construction Logistics & Project Management

  • Oversee project timelines, budgets, labor planning, procurement, transportation logistics, and installation schedules
  • Coordinate all phases of load-in, installation, strike, and load-out operations for events and productions
  • Manage vendor relationships including scenic houses, fabricators, rental providers, production suppliers, trucking/logistics partners, and specialty contractors
  • Develop construction schedules and ensure projects remain on time and within budget
  • Troubleshoot structural, operational, and logistical challenges in real time during active builds and live event execution

Venue & Infrastructure Development

  • Support permanent and semi-permanent venue development projects including bars, VIP areas, hospitality environments, modular structures, and operational infrastructure
  • Assist in evaluating venue feasibility, infrastructure requirements, and operational buildouts for new projects and properties
  • Coordinate permitting, inspections, engineering approvals, and compliance requirements where applicable
  • Partner with Venue Management for temporary and permanent site infrastructure including fencing, power distribution, utilities, storage, and back-of-house functionality

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all builds, installations, and operational procedures comply with safety regulations, engineering requirements, and venue standards
  • Implement best practices around construction safety, rigging awareness, equipment operation, and job-site management
  • Conduct safety meetings and maintain a culture of accountability and professionalism across all crews and vendors

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in scenic construction, entertainment fabrication, experiential production, theatrical builds, live events, touring productions, or commercial construction management
  • Strong hands-on knowledge of carpentry, scenic fabrication, construction methods, and installation logistics
  • Experience leading build shops, fabrication teams, or construction crews in fast-paced environments
  • Ability to interpret renderings, CAD drawings, construction plans, and production layouts
  • Strong understanding of live event production environments and operational execution
  • Proven experience managing multiple concurrent builds and deadlines
  • Excellent leadership, communication, budgeting, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and adapt quickly to changing production needs
  • Proficiency in project management tools, construction scheduling, and production workflows preferred
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours during active builds and event periods

Preferred Experience

  • Background in themed entertainment, film/TV scenic construction, Broadway/theatrical production, experiential marketing, or immersive event environments
  • Experience working with large-scale festivals, touring productions, or temporary event infrastructure
  • Knowledge of rigging, staging systems, truss structures, scenic automation, and production integration
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Vectorworks, SketchUp, or similar design/build software preferred
  • Forklift, scissor lift, and OSHA certifications preferred
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and move materials and equipment up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, and work actively on job sites for extended periods
  • Comfortable working in fabrication shops, warehouses, outdoor event sites, and active construction environments
  • Ability to travel and work extended hours during productions and installations

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for a builder, creator, and operational problem solver who can bridge the gap between imagination and execution. Someone who understands how to take a creative vision and physically bring it to life through craftsmanship, logistics, leadership, and relentless attention to detail.

This role requires a leader who is equally comfortable reviewing renderings in a creative meeting, managing crews in a fabrication shop, and overseeing overnight installs on-site during live event execution.
