What is freelance computer programming?

Freelance computer programming involves working independently as a programmer or developer, rather than being employed by a single company. Freelancers take on projects from various clients, which can range from building websites and applications to troubleshooting software and writing code for specific tasks. This type of work offers flexibility in choosing projects, setting schedules, and working remotely. However, it also requires managing your own business tasks, such as finding clients, negotiating contracts, and handling taxes.

What are common challenges freelance computer programmers face when managing multiple clients simultaneously?

Freelance computer programmers often juggle several projects and clients at once, which can present challenges such as balancing deadlines, prioritizing tasks, and maintaining clear communication. Effective time management and organizational skills are crucial to ensure that deliverables are met and client expectations are managed. Additionally, freelancers must be proactive in setting boundaries and clarifying project scopes to avoid scope creep and ensure a healthy work-life balance. Building transparent communication channels with clients helps prevent misunderstandings and fosters long-term professional relationships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Computer Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Computer Programmer, you need strong coding abilities in relevant programming languages, problem-solving skills, and a solid understanding of software development principles, typically supported by a degree or equivalent practical experience. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), project management tools, and knowledge of frameworks or platforms specific to your niche is highly valued. Excellent communication, time management, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for managing client relationships and deadlines. These skills ensure you can deliver high-quality solutions, maintain client satisfaction, and succeed in a competitive freelance market.

Job description

Join PIC, a leading digital marketing agency in Pittsburgh, in an exciting journey of growth and innovation as a Level 1 Full Stack Developer. At PIC, we specialize in creating dynamic digital marketing strategies and building the digital infrastructure that powers them. We're looking to add a dedicated and driven developer to be a part of our expanding team in the next 2-3 months.

Responsibilities for the Level 1 Full Stack Developer Position

  • Build and Maintain Client Sites & Storefronts:
    • Develop and maintain client sites and e-commerce storefronts, primarily on WordPress with secondary work in Shopify or HubSpot CMS.
    • Execute custom integrations under senior direction - you write the code; senior leadership reviews the architecture.
    • Implement tracking, forms, automations, and conversion-focused UX changes that drive measurable client outcomes.
  • Break/Fix and Troubleshooting:
    • Assist in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and routing website break/fix tickets to keep client sites running smoothly.
    • Flag risks and edge cases to senior leadership early - your job is to surface issues, not solve critical ones solo.
  • AI-Native Development Workflows:
    • Use AI coding tools (Claude Code and similar) to plan, build, and QA work efficiently.
    • Contribute to how PIC uses AI to deliver more for clients without compromising quality.
    • Document what you build so account managers and strategists can hand it off cleanly to clients.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Partner directly with strategists and account managers to understand client goals and translate them into technical solutions.
    • Participate in code review and development practices that keep our work ship-ready.
    • Communicate clearly about what you're building, why, and any blockers or risks along the way.

Qualifications

  • 2-4 years of hands-on development experience (can include freelance, agency, or in-house projects).
  • Strong working knowledge of WordPress (PHP, custom themes, plugin basics, and site maintenance).
  • Working experience with either Shopify (Liquid, theme development) or HubSpot CMS (HubL, workflows, custom objects).
  • Comfort with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and at least one server-side language (PHP, Node, or Python).
  • Experience with version control and standard development practices, including Git branching, pull requests, and participating in code review.
  • A disciplined approach to testing and validating your own work before handing it off.
  • Experience reading and consuming REST APIs (HubSpot, Shopify, Stripe, or similar third-party integrations).
  • Strong written communication - you can explain what you built and why in clear, accessible language.
  • Located in or near the Greater Pittsburgh region (Morgantown to Erie, Pittsburgh to State College).

What We're Really Looking For

  • Trajectory over track record. We'd rather invest in a developer climbing toward great than hire one who's already settled into good.
  • Core values fit. PIC runs on a defined set of values - we'll talk about them in the interview, and we'll be looking for evidence you live them.
  • Attitude. Hungry, humble, and coachable. You take feedback well and you give it honestly.
  • Curiosity about AI tooling. You don't need to be an expert - you need to be the kind of person who'd spend a Saturday afternoon figuring out Claude Code on your own.

Hours, Salary & Benefits

  • Competitive salary: $65,000 - $80,000/year, based on experience and demonstrated trajectory.
  • 100% paid healthcare for the employee.
  • Dental, vision, and supplement insurance options available.
  • Flexible work schedule with remote/hybrid options.
  • Company-provided computer and development tools.
  • PTO.
  • Hybrid working environment.
  • Direct mentorship from senior leadership invested in your growth.
  • Opportunities for professional development in a collaborative and innovative work environment.

  • Small team where your work is seen, your growth is supported, and the next level is earnable.
  • A foundation for the next stage of your career - we're building developers, not just filling seats.
