What is a freelance computer programmer?

A freelance computer programmer is a self-employed professional who writes, tests, and maintains computer software for clients on a project or contract basis, rather than being a full-time employee of a single company. Freelance programmers often work remotely and may specialize in various programming languages or types of software development, such as web, mobile, or application development. They are responsible for managing their own schedules, finding clients, and handling business tasks like invoicing and taxes. This career offers flexibility and independence, but also requires strong self-motivation and business skills.

What does a freelance computer programmer do?

As a freelance computer programmer, your job is to develop computer code for your customer. This may include creating new software, modifying an existing application, or setting up a database for the software to use. Freelance programmers work on projects of all sizes, from small tasks that only take an hour or two to complete to major jobs at large companies. Depending on the company's needs, you may need to use a wide selection of programming languages or techniques, interface your software with existing code, and manage multiple deadlines at once. Many freelance computer programmers focus on building a portfolio of completed projects, which is particularly helpful if you want a permanent position later in your career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance computer programmer?

To thrive as a Freelance Computer Programmer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages (such as Python, JavaScript, or Java), problem-solving abilities, and a solid understanding of software development principles, often demonstrated by a degree or relevant portfolio. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms, and project management tools is typically required, while optional certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Developer) can enhance credibility. Excellent communication, time management, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for managing clients and meeting deadlines independently. These abilities are vital to consistently deliver high-quality solutions, build client trust, and succeed in a competitive freelance environment.

What are some common challenges freelance computer programmers face when working with multiple clients simultaneously?

Freelance computer programmers often juggle several projects at once, which requires strong time management and organizational skills. Balancing competing deadlines, adapting to different coding standards, and effectively communicating with clients across various industries can be challenging. Job description

About Odys
Our mission at Odys is simple - we build safe, sustainable aircraft to cut travel time in half on the world's busiest corridors. Our flagship aircraft Alta enables travelers to skip the big-airport hassle by using city helipads and local airports to connect cities less than 1,000 miles apart (approx 40% of flights). And on average cut CO2 by 76% on tens of billions of flight miles globally.
To get there, we start with our UAV called Laila for commercial logistics, medical transport, humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and defense missions. We're deploying aircraft with launch partners (Fiji Airways, Honeywell, Aramex, US Navy) beginning in 2026 and already have firm orders for aircraft under contract.
We're a team of expert engineers from deep tech and aerospace that focus on fast iterations loops (completed transition flight faster than our peers) combined with mastery of the aircraft certification process. Previously, our team developed custom drones, brought multiple automotive platforms into production, and electrified transportation vehicles that magnetically levitate, that roll, that fly. Together, we've been learning, developing, building, testing, and preparing for this challenge our entire lives.
What You'll Work On
  • Design graphics and visual assets for Odys' social media channels, website, and external communications
  • Support the creation of marketing materials including event graphics, banners, and promotional content
  • Work with the design team to integrate 3D renderings and product imagery into presentations and marketing materials in ways that are visually cohesive and on-message
  • Help maintain and organize the Odys design asset library so the team can find and use approved materials quickly
  • Assist in evolving Odys' visual identity by applying brand guidelines consistently across all outputs and flagging opportunities to strengthen them
What We're Looking For
  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a program in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Industrial Design, or a related field
  • A portfolio (even early work, student projects, or freelance samples) that shows strong visual instincts: good layout, clear hierarchy, and an eye for composition and type
  • Working proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign), CAD software (Keyshot, Rhino, NX), and PowerPoint or Keynote; Figma is a plus
  • An interest in aviation, aerospace, or deep tech is a genuine advantage
  • Comfortable asking questions, taking feedback, and iterating quickly in a fast-paced startup environment
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational habits
What You'll Gain
  • Real work that ships! Your designs will be seen by investors, partners, and customers, not buried in a folder
  • Mentorship from experienced designers and direct exposure to how a hardware startup communicates its story at a critical stage of growth
  • A portfolio-building experience that spans pitch decks, brand design, marketing assets, and visual storytelling

Please include a portfolio link or PDF samples of renderings and previous projects with your application. Work-in-progress and student projects are welcome.
