About the Role:
The Staff Accountant I position is an entry-level accounting role within the Investment Accounting team, responsible for supporting the recording, reporting, and analysis of investment activity for the Company's insurance and other subsidiaries. Working under close supervision, this individual will contribute to GAAP, statutory, and management reporting processes through accurate journal entries, reconciliations, and audit support. The Company utilizes multiple forms of technology to assist in the preparation of investment analysis and schedules.
The Staff Accountant I position reports to the Manager, Investment Accounting and will be based out of our office in Overland Park, Kansas. We work a hybrid schedule, offering flexibility to work both remotely and on-site.
  • Account for and report on various investments including, but not limited to, debt instruments, equity investments, and derivatives;
  • Contribute to the data management process by ensuring appropriate source information is captured for reporting needs;
  • Support recurring and ad-hoc reports and dashboards using a variety of data to communicate investment activity clearly and accurately;
  • Complete investment-related journal entries within the general ledger system;
  • Complete a monthly analysis of general ledger reconciliations to underlying investment data from our portfolio accounting platform, PAM For Investments (PFI);
  • Assist in the preparation of quarterly and annual investment-related disclosures for audited GAAP and Statutory financial statements;
  • Assist in analyzing investment accounting results and preparing summaries for management review;
  • Complete and assist with audit-related workpapers for interim and annual audits; address follow-up questions from internal and external auditors as they arise;
  • Participate in development and changes to areas of responsibility that would enhance, improve, or facilitate job performance, process, or workflow;
  • Work with internal sources including the investment team, actuarial, and accounting vendors to ensure proper understanding and reporting of financial data;
  • Maintain documentation files for investments according to the position's responsibilities;
  • Assist in supporting a strong internal control environment within the Investment Accounting function;
  • Assist in maintaining, testing, and evaluating software upgrades and enhancements.

What We're Looking For:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • Experience: 0-2 years of accounting experience preferred; recent graduates with relevant internship or coursework in accounting or finance considered. Experience in insurance industry investment accounting a plus.
  • Technical Skills: Intermediate Excel and MS Office Suite proficiency required; knowledge of PeopleSoft and PFI preferred; willingness to learn investment-related systems required.
  • Knowledge: Foundational understanding of GAAP and accounting principles required; knowledge of investments (fixed-income, equity, derivatives) and statutory accounting preferred.
