Job description

Q Investments, a multi-billion dollar private investment firm and family office located in Fort Worth, Texas, is seeking a Deputy General Counsel. Established in 1994, the Q Family Office is an organization that combines a 30-year history with a deep entrepreneurial spirit. The family office currently includes a manager of a $500 million hedge fund/private investment firm, a $3 billion bank, a $400 million real estate investment firm, a billion-dollar helicopter company, and a $275 million charitable foundation. In the past, funds managed by the family office have owned an aviation leasing company, a grocery store chain, an auto parts company, and multiple other businesses. The Associate Attorney will work with a multitude of individuals with various legal, accounting and financial backgrounds who handle the legal, regulatory, compliance and transactional work for the family office.

This is a high-profile position with direct access to and interaction with individuals from all divisions of the company, including the company's General Counsel, partners, CFO, and portfolio managers. Compensation will be in-line with top BigLaw firms but normal schedule will be 50-60 hours per week maximum compared to 80-100 hours per week typical at BigLaw early in your career, approximately 50 to 55 hours in the office and the rest at home. Very little evening or weekend work is required.

The job requires an in-office presence so those who value work-from-home should not apply. The role offers 12. 5 days PTO/sick days and 5-10 firmwide WFH days already in place. Beyond that, regular work hours in the Fort Worth, Texas office are Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm.

Note, Q Family Office's first two GCs were hired around the age of 30 and both left to become Presidents of multi-billion-dollar family offices in Texas. We have a demonstrated track record of grooming attorneys for much larger roles due to the breadth, depth, complexity, and dollar impact of the legal issues we manage on an ongoing basis!

Responsibilities will include: (we promise never a dull moment!)
  • Working directly with the founder and other senior partners and executive staff on a wide variety of complex legal issues, from both a strategic and tactical perspective.
  • Structuring, negotiating and implementing various transactions and investments for the Q Family Office, including publicly traded securities, syndicated bank loans, swaps, real estate transactions, and U.S. and foreign private market investments;
  • Working with the hedge fund, the bank, the real estate lending arm, and the operating companies on various projects
  • Assisting with regulatory and compliance matters
  • Working with the firm's outside litigators on complex litigation matters
  • Working with and overseeing some of the world's top attorneys in numerous areas of the law, including M&A, security, corporate, partnership, tax, employment, bankruptcy and litigation. As an example, the firm hired Quinn Emanuel to successfully win a $700 million judgement representing one of largest paydays in that firm's long history.(John Quinn himself later visited the office to thank the QFO for Quinn's Emanuel $70 million payday)
  • Helping the Q Family Office founding partner with very complex trust and estate plans, which are already in place but must be regularly updated and monitored based on evolving circumstances, priorities, and opportunities.
  • Structuring large charitable grants (up to $25 million) to major research institutions
The successful candidate will have:
  • Graduated from a top 15 Law School in the last 1-3 years
  • 170+ LSAT score
  • 3.75 GPA
  • Important position on Law Review or an equivalent organization
  • Outstanding undergraduate academic record.
  • Some kind of Texas connection - lived in Texas, went to school in Texas, worked in Texas, have family in Texas, etc.
  • Demonstrate hands-on experience with AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude) to enhance productivity and workflow.
  • Have explored AI-driven solutions to automate repetitive work, synthesize information, or support decision-making and be able to demonstrate such solutions.

We are looking for the best of the best who wants to work across a multitude of specialties as a principal rather than a service provider. You become the client hiring the world's best law firms and attorneys to accomplish incredibly complex tasks across finance, banking, real estate, and Foundation specialties.
