Entry Level Tug Master Jobs (NOW HIRING)

Overview

The Deckhand is directly responsible and accountable to the Master and Mate and works under their direction. This role supports the safe and efficient operation of vessels and barges, performing deck operations, vessel maintenance, and safety duties. Deckhand responsibilities may vary from vessel to vessel and watch to watch as circumstances dictate.

Responsibilities

SAFETY

• Understand and properly use PPE appropriate for your task.
• Attend Safety Meetings, Briefings, and Training.
• Know your emergency station bill assignments and task requirements associated with those assignments.
• Thorough understanding of responsibilities in case of emergency, including reporting to your muster station with proper PPE on sound of general alarm.
• Know the location and proper use of emergency equipment on board, including activation of the General and Fire Alarm Systems.
• Report any hazardous or unsafe condition to the Master and/or Mate.
• If capable, make "on-the-spot" corrections to unsafe conditions and promptly communicate such corrections to the Master or Mate.
• Identify unsafe conditions you are not capable of correcting and promptly communicate such conditions to the Master or Mate.
• Perform Lockout/Tagout procedures as required.

NAVIGATION AND DECK OPERATIONS

• Stand a proper lookout watch when directed by the Master or Mate.
• Assist with tug and barge shifting evolutions; assist in dropping, spotting, and switching barges at docks.
• Assist the vessel and barge in making up or breaking the tow.
• Operate winches and ratchets, handle lines, including splicing and throwing lines.
• Communicate traffic and distance using VHF handheld radio.
• Make general rounds for the safety and security of the vessel; ensure vessel maintains watertight integrity.
• Assist with loading and unloading of barges.
• Assist engineer during fueling and oil transfer evolutions, as needed.

ACCIDENTS, INCIDENTS, AND INJURIES

• Report all accidents, incidents, and injuries to the Master.

TRAINING

• Complete all required training and participate in drills.

VESSEL AND EQUIPMENT

• Responsible for proper surface preparation for painting and painting structure as directed by the Master.
• Assess and report surface coating and deck conditions, rust, and damage to vessel surfaces.
• Regularly check and inventory non-engine room supplies.
• Check the engine room, machinery, and equipment as instructed by the Master or Engineer.
• Clean and disinfect all areas of the boat, both interior and exterior.
• Stow loose equipment and maintain good seamanship and organization.
• Assist in meal preparations.
• Repair flame screens in vent pipes, maintain valves, grease winches, fittings, equipment, systems, and perform other general maintenance as directed by the Master/Mate, Engineer, and shoreside management.
• Complete other duties as directed by the Master or Mate.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE

• Prior maritime or deck experience preferred; motivated entry-level candidates will be considered.

EDUCATION

• High School diploma or GED preferred.

WORK CONDITIONS

• Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
• Must be able to live and work in close quarters aboard a vessel for extended rotations; typical schedules include 7/7, 14/14, and 20/10 day rotations.
• Must be willing to attend required training on and off scheduled work time.
• Must be able to lift, carry, or move equipment up to 75 pounds.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

• Valid TWIC card required prior to start.
• Valid Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) required.
• Must possess a valid driver's license.
• Must be able to satisfy all United States Coast Guard physical requirements.
• Must be able to satisfy all United States Coast Guard Chemical Drug Testing Program requirements for vessel personnel.
• Must be 18 years of age.
• Basic computer skills required.
• Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
• Must be familiar with Company guidelines, safety practices, and procedures as set forth in the SMS Manual.
