Security Guard

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History, founded in 1920, is located in the heart of University Circle, five miles east of downtown Cleveland, Ohio. For more than a century, the Museum has inspired visitors to connect with the wonders of science and nature. As Ohio's largest natural history museum, we use our vast collections and state-of-the-art facilities to contribute to scientific understanding worldwide. Our scientists conduct research across a variety of disciplines, making groundbreaking discoveries about early human ancestors, ancient Ohio, animal and plant life around the world, and more. We steward more than 12,500 acres of wild habitats through our Natural Areas Program, working to protect the environment of northern Ohio and the diverse species that call it home.

The museum is seeking a dedicated professional to join our Protection Services team.

Position Summary

The Security Guard plays an essential role at the museum by ensuring the safety and security of the Museum premises, exhibits, staff, and visitors. The Security Guard will be entrusted with protecting valuable artifacts, artwork, and cultural treasures while maintaining a welcoming and pleasant environment for visitors. This position plays a crucial role in preventing theft, vandalism, and unauthorized access to restricted areas. This is an entry-level position. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular patrols throughout the museum premises, including galleries, entrances and exits, exhibition halls, storage areas, and public spaces
  • Monitor surveillance cameras, alarm systems, and other security equipment to detect any suspicious activities or breaches
  • Respond promptly to emergencies and take appropriate actions to ensure the safety of individuals and protection of museum assets
  • Verify the identification of staff, visitors, contractors, and deliveries, ensuring authorized access to restricted areas
  • Enforce museum policies regarding prohibited items, photography, and visitor conduct
  • Maintain knowledge of emergency procedures, including fire evacuation, medical emergencies, and natural disasters
  • Conduct regular checks of fire extinguishers, emergency exits, and other safety equipment and report any deficiencies or maintenance needs
  • Accurately document and report all security incidents, accidents, violations, and unusual activities in a timely manner
  • Provide courteous and helpful assistance to visitors, answering questions, providing directions, and ensuring a positive visitor experience
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Security Management team
Education/Experience

High School Diploma or GED. Customer service experience preferred.

  • Ability to respond to varying situations in an appropriate manner
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends
Working Conditions

This position will be working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Position may require sitting, walking, or standing for extended periods of time. Some physical effort may occasionally be required. Must be able to lift 30 lbs with or without reasonable accommodations.
