BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The M BD SUBSTATION ENGINEERING Department of the H ENGINEERING Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: PROFESSIONAL). This posting seeks to fill at either the Engineer I or Engineer II level; whichever level is most suited to the qualifications of the applying candidate.

Engineer I 
JOB FUNCTION:
Under direct supervision of higher level professional engineers, performs design, project engineering, project management and general engineering duties in support of the capital construction programs of Hawaiian Electric. Independently evaluates, selects and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria using judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications. Assignments have clear and specified objectives and require the investigation of a limited number of variables. Receives instruction on specific assignment objectives, complex features and possible solutions. Assistance is furnished on unusual problems and work is reviewed for application of sound professional judgment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepares plans, layouts, design calculations and related engineering design in accordance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Conducts project design and cost alternative studies, field inspections, and prepares associated reports.
  • Prepares and manages cost estimates, budgets, schedules, material and construction specifications and construction contracts for projects assigned.
  • Performs project engineering and project management functions for assigned projects.
  • Coordinates work by consulting engineers, evaluates proposals and bids for engineering services and equipment and makes recommendations.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
  • Understands the Company's Policies, Mission, Vision, Values, and are following the culture dimensions to ensure the success of the company

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge Requirements

  • A BS degree in engineering in a discipline relevant to the Department from an accredited engineering school.
  • Thorough knowledge of the theories and principles of engineering acquired through advanced college level courses or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering design, project engineering, project management and construction methods associated with electric utility facilities normally acquired through a minimum of 3 years' relevant engineering experience.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, and ability to learn additional software tools to perform work.
  • Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operational excellence.  
  • Working knowledge of SafeStart principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.

Skills Requirements

  • Good leadership skills including effective written, oral and listening communications skills and interpersonal skills, in order to work effectively with all levels of the company, with outside contractors and consultants, governmental agencies, community groups and customers.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle confrontational, difficult and/or sensitive issues. Ability to handle such issues with professionalism while using tact, courtesy and discretion.
  • Ability to do in-depth analytical and administrative skills for such tasks as preparing and monitoring project requirements and resolving cost and time constraints, conflicting priorities.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license. Must meet the standards for required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy.

Experience Requirements

  • Experience in the design of additions, modifications, extensions, upgrades and rearrangements of company generation, transmission, substation, and communication and control systems and facilities. Experience must be in a specific and relevant area of expertise.

Engineer II 

JOB FUNCTION:
Performs design, project engineering, project management, and general engineering duties in support of the capital construction programs of Hawaiian Electric. Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria. Devises new approaches to problems encountered.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepares plans, layouts, design calculations, and related engineering design work in accordance Company standards, applicable codes, ordinances and regulations. Develops new or improved techniques and procedures for equipment, material, products, or methods.
  • Performs project engineering and project management functions on major capital projects for Hawaiian. Works with City/County, State, and Federal government agencies on rules, regulations and permits regarding projects.
  • Conducts engineering studies, prepares reports, and reviews/comments on technical reports and studies prepared by others.
  • Prepares requests for proposal for engineering services, evaluates proposals and makes recommendations. Directs design efforts by consultants and checks designs prepared by consultants.
  • Prepares material, equipment construction specifications for bid, and evaluates proposals and makes recommendations for purchase.
  • Develops project schedules and project cost estimates for inclusion in the capital budget.
  • Conducts field inspections to verify field conditions and check compliance with specifications, then prepares reports of findings.
  • Understands the Company's Policies, Mission, Vision, Values, and are following the culture dimensions to ensure the success of the company
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited engineering school in in a discipline relevant to the Department.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of power engineering design, project engineering, project management, design standards, and construction methods associated with electric utility facilities normally acquired through a minimum of 5 years relevant engineering experience.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, and ability to learn additional software tools to perform work.
  • Working knowledge of City/County, State and Federal laws, ordinances, regulations, codes, practices procedures as related to specific projects and assignments.
  • Working knowledge of Hawaiian Electric's Capital and O&M budget procedures strongly preferred.   Working knowledge of System Planning and Protection preferred.
  • Working knowledge of business writing, accounting, economics, business law and finance are desirable.
  • Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operational excellence.   Working knowledge of SafeStart principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.

  • Multiple 5 - 7 year's of experience in the design of additions, modifications, extensions, upgrades and arrangements of company generation, transmission, substation, and communication and control systems and facilities, protective relaying systems, or power systems analysis work, and five (5) years design experience must be in a specific area of expertise.
  • State of Hawaii Professional Engineer License in relevant discipline is required in order to stamp drawings and designs required to obtain construction and building permits.
