The award-winning team at University Communications and Marketing (UCM) is seeking motivated students to join the Student News Bureau. The Student News Bureau is a group of student storytellers and content creators who work closely with the UCM team of professionals to find and share news and multimedia stories about the great things that are going on across the University. Writers will coordinate and write news articles, blog posts, photo essay copy and press releases that support Ohio University. This job is heavily focused on writing and will include opportunities to work with SNB team members to create content in a variety of forms including video, photography, graphics and various content on ohio.edu. Additional responsibilities may include gathering content from other sources to disseminate via email or other digital platforms. SNB team members benefit from professional growth opportunities, connecting with award-winning professionals in the field.
Job Profile
Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:
Performs a variety of tasks to support University Communications & Marketing. Duties may include writing and editing communications and news stories, managing social media content, updating websites and multimedia content, designing promotional materials, supporting marketing campaigns, and assisting with event communications.
Level Summary
Performs basic tasks and assists with administrative or operational duties under supervision. Roles are entry-level and aimed at providing exposure to workplace environments.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Limited supervisory responsibilities. May supervise other student workers.
Fiscal Responsibilities:
No budgetary responsibility.
Problem Solving:
Addresses routine, well-defined problems under supervision.
Independence of Action:
Works under close supervision.
Communication and Collaboration:
Communicates primarily with supervisor and peers. Collaborates with team members to accomplish tasks.
Minimum Qualifications
Enrolled for classes at Ohio University, Hocking College, another post-secondary education institution, or a secondary school during the current semester, immediate previous semester, or immediate upcoming semester. Able to follow instructions and complete tasks within deadlines. Basic knowledge of office software and communication tools. Departments may have specific minimum requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
  • Strong background in written and verbal communication (journalism or English composition courses, experience interviewing people and writing news or feature-type articles)
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to learn
  • Enthusiastic interest in communications, marketing, and/or branding
  • Second-year enrolled student and above

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Major or minor in communications-related field of study
  • Familiarity with AP style and journalistic standards

Working Condition/Physical Demands:
This role is primarily desk-based and involves extensive use of desktop computers. Occasionally, the job may require travel to attend meetings and programs.
