Job Summary:

Nicklaus Engineering Inc. is currently seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Operator CDL - Field Technician to join our team. The Operator CDL - Field Technician performs entry-level field and operational duties in support of construction, geotechnical, materials testing, environmental, or related engineering projects. This position requires independent operation of company vehicles requiring a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), transporting equipment and materials to job sites, and assisting with field testing, sampling, and general site operations under moderate supervision. Experience in Hydro Excavation, Potholing, Jett/Vac Truck, Geotechnical Drill Rigs utilizing Hollow stem auger, Direct push & CPT a plus.

Operator CDL - Field Technician also participates in ongoing safety and equipment training to ensure proper and safe performance of all duties.


This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Employees in this position are eligible for overtime pay in accordance with applicable federal and state laws.

  • Safely operate company vehicles and equipment, including VAC Truck, camera van, drill rig, following technical specifications and safety protocols. This also includes driving or transporting equipment to and from project sites.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and maintain DOT-compliant documentation.
  • Ensure vehicles and equipment are properly maintained and report maintenance needs promptly.
  • Comply with all applicable Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, including drug and alcohol testing requirements.
  • Interpret drawings, site layouts, and instructions provided by supervisors and project managers.
  • Operate basic field equipment, tools, and machinery under supervision.
  • Load, unload, and secure materials and equipment.
  • Perform manual labor tasks including lifting, carrying, digging, and site preparation.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of vehicles, equipment, and work areas.
  • Accurately record field data and complete required reports and logs.
  • Follow project specifications, safety standards, and company procedures.
  • Support senior technicians and field supervisors as needed.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of safe vehicle operation and DOT regulations.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, as well as exercise independent judgement.
  • Strong attention to safety and detail.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience in construction, materials testing, or surveying.
  • OSHA 30, CPR – First Aid, HAZWOPER certifications.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, data entry, mobile field apps).
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50+ pounds regularly and occasionally up to 75 pounds.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat.
  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb for extended periods.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Zero (0) to three (3) or more years of experience preferred.
License and Certification Requirements:
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) appropriate for vehicle class operated.
  • Valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT Medical Card).
  • Acceptable driving record and Evidence of Insurability.
  • Ability to comply with DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements.

Failure to maintain CDL eligibility or DOT compliance may result in reassignment or separation of employment.
