Description The purpose of positions in this class is installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, equipment, and components in government buildings for the City of Alexandria. Systems range from residential to 480 volts, and include emergency generators, three phase motors and control devices and circuits.

Examples of Duties Attends daily meetings with supervisor; receives work orders and prioritizes daily schedule to complete electrical projects; installs and repairs electrical systems, equipment, and components in government owned buildings; performs diagnostic tests on shorts, failures and control circuits; coordinates work with various contractors. Maintains and repairs existing electrical systems, including conducting preventive maintenance on generators and other electrical components. Performs new wiring projects and installs junctions, panels, fixtures, outlets, and switches in and outside of government buildings; installs, troubleshoots and repairs electrical systems, apparatus, electrical and electronic components of machinery and equipment following electrical code, manuals, schematic diagrams, blueprints and other specifications.

Inspects electrical equipment for code compliance, performs preventive maintenance for all equipment, and maintains related records. Responds to emergency service requests and emergency calls after regular working hours. Purchases or assists with the purchasing, as well as maintains the electrical supply inventory; ensures availability of electrical supplies as needed for assigned projects.

Maintains records and files reports pertaining to work assignments. Maintains trucks and tools; notifies supervisor of potential problems and maintenance needs of trucks and equipment operation. Installs and repairs motor starters, controls, relays, coils, and switches of various voltages up to 480v.

Installs low voltage cabling. Typical Qualifications High school diploma or GED, vocational or technical school training in electric construction and technology; supplemented by significant working experience in maintenance, repair, and installation of electrical systems; including three phase industrial systems, equivalent to that of a journey-level electrician; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Journey-level licensed Electrician is desired, as is knowledge of the applicable Electrical Construction Codes.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Must possess a valid driver's license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment for this classification.
