What are the typical duties and team structure for an EMT trainee?

As an EMT Trainee, you'll primarily assist certified EMTs and paramedics in providing emergency medical care, which may include taking vitals, preparing equipment, and supporting patient transport. You’ll often work in small teams, usually alongside a supervising EMT or paramedic who guides your training and ensures patient safety. Your shifts might include exposure to a variety of emergency situations, offering valuable hands-on experience. This collaborative environment helps you develop practical skills and prepares you for independent EMT certification and future advancement in emergency medical services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EMT trainee, and why are they important?

To thrive as an EMT Trainee, you typically need a high school diploma or GED, basic medical knowledge, and physical stamina, along with the ability to complete an accredited EMT training program. Familiarity with emergency medical equipment, ambulance protocols, and patient care documentation systems is important. Strong communication, quick decision-making, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are standout soft skills. These abilities are crucial for delivering effective emergency care and collaborating efficiently in high-stress environments.

Do you get paid to train as an EMT Trainee?

EMT trainees typically do not receive pay during their initial training or certification courses, which focus on learning emergency medical skills. However, once they complete training and become certified EMTs, they are usually paid employees earning wages for their work in emergency response environments. Some training programs may offer stipends or part-time pay, but this varies by employer and program.

What is an EMT trainee?

An EMT Trainee is an entry-level position for individuals training to become Emergency Medical Technicians. Trainees typically undergo classroom instruction, hands-on practice, and on-the-job training under supervision. Their responsibilities may include assisting certified EMTs, learning how to provide basic life support, and responding to emergency situations. This role is designed to prepare individuals for certification and full EMT duties.

Is it hard to get hired as an EMT Trainee?

Getting hired as an EMT Trainee can be competitive, as many emergency services require candidates to have a valid EMT certification and sometimes additional training or experience. Employers often look for strong communication skills, the ability to handle stressful situations, and a clean background check. The hiring process may include interviews, background screening, and sometimes physical or skills assessments.

Position Summary
New hires begin as Hyperbaric Medical Assistant Trainees (HMA-T) and advance to the full Hyperbaric Medical Assistant (HMA) role by completing a structured, company-funded certification pathway that includes earning both the Certified Hyperbaric Specialist (CHS) and Certified Hyperbaric & Wound Specialist (CHWS) credentials over approximately two years. Working under the supervision of licensed medical providers, HMAs rotate between the wound care clinic and hyperbaric chamber, assisting with wound procedures, providing direct patient care, and supporting hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatments while following strict clinical and safety protocols. This position reports administratively to the Facility Leader, clinically to the RN Clinical Lead, and operationally to the Lead Chamber Tech/Safety Director. EMT-credentialed candidates are strongly preferred and have the opportunity to pursue an advanced leadership track leading to Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT), Lead Chamber Tech, and Safety Director roles.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare patients and treatment rooms; assist providers during wound procedures (as a Medical Assistant under physician/NP/PA delegation)
  • Perform delegated clinical tasks: dressing changes, wound cleansing and preparation, aseptic procedures, measurement and photo documentation
  • Record vitals, patient history, and visit documentation in the EHR
  • Support the RN Clinical Lead in day-to-day wound-floor operations
  • Tend patients through hyperbaric treatments under the oversight of the Lead Chamber Tech / Safety Director (after 40-hour course completion)
  • Conduct pre-dive patient screening and grounding checks per SOP; monitor patients during treatment
  • Operate chamber support duties as trained and assigned; participate in emergency drills
  • Maintain treatment logs and safety documentation
  • Follow all NFPA 99, facility safety, and infection-prevention protocols without exception
  • Log clinical hours accurately in the rotation system; complete assigned Trainual modules on schedule and pass competency checks
  • Deliver the patient experience standard: patients receive attention, dignity, and calm at every touchpoint
Required Qualifications
  • Current EMT certification, MA certification/registration - required (EMT preferred, in priority order)
  • BLS current at hire, or earned within the first week of employment; no patient-facing or chamber duty without it
  • Comfortable in a clinical environment with direct, sustained patient contact
  • Reliable, coachable, and able to follow written protocol exactly - chamber work is a zero-shortcut discipline
  • Able to perform the essential functions of a cross-trained rotation, including chamber attendance and (at multiplace facilities) inside-attendant duty under pressure
  • Meet and maintain the facility's fitness-for-pressure-exposure standard for inside attendants (consistent with UHMS guidance)
  • All pre-employment requirements per the UrgentFlex HR Baseline (background, drug screening under the chamber-facing zero-tolerance tier, physical capability, right-to-work)
Preferred Qualifications
  • EMT certification preferred and prioritized for hire
  • Interest in pursuing the leadership and safety track toward CHT (Certified Hyperbaric Technologist), Lead Chamber Tech, and Safety Director
  • Previous experience in wound care, hyperbaric medicine, emergency medicine, or a clinical patient care environment
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative, protocol-driven healthcare setting
Compensation, Benefits & More
Compensation: $17.00-$23.00 per hour
Benefits:
  • Health insurance
  • Tuition reimbursement

Job Type: Full-time
Location: Marietta, Georgia (On-site)
