CertificationsHazardous materials handling, safety trainingEquipment operation, safety protocols
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, chemical processing facilitiesRefineries, chemical plants, waste processing sites
Job ResponsibilitiesOverseeing pyrolysis processes, monitoring reactorsOperating machinery, maintaining plant safety

Day Pyrolysis specialists focus on managing pyrolysis processes, while Day Operators handle daily equipment operation. Both roles require safety training and work in industrial settings, but their specific duties differ based on process oversight versus equipment operation.

What are some typical safety protocols that Day Pyrolysis operators must follow during their shifts?

Day Pyrolysis operators work with high-temperature equipment and potentially hazardous materials, so strict adherence to safety protocols is essential. Operators are typically required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), conduct regular equipment checks, and follow established procedures for handling feedstocks and byproducts. Regular safety drills, clear communication with team members, and thorough documentation of operations are also common practices. These protocols help minimize risks and ensure a safe, efficient work environment.

What is a Day Pyrolysis operator and what do they do?

A Day Pyrolysis operator is responsible for overseeing and managing the pyrolysis process during the daytime shift. Pyrolysis is a thermal decomposition process that breaks down organic materials, such as plastic or biomass, at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen to produce fuel, gas, or other valuable byproducts. Operators monitor equipment, ensure safety protocols, maintain optimal operating conditions, and troubleshoot any issues that arise during the process. They also record data, perform routine maintenance, and ensure that environmental and quality standards are met.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Pyrolysis Plant Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pyrolysis Plant Operator, you need a solid understanding of chemical processes, mechanical aptitude, and typically a background in engineering or industrial operations. Familiarity with control systems, safety protocols, and certifications such as HAZMAT or OSHA are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for maintaining safety and efficiency. These competencies ensure proper plant functioning, minimize risks, and help achieve optimal production outcomes.

Job description

About Charm
Our mission is to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂. We convert excess inedible biomass into carbon-rich bio-oil and inject it into underground storage for permanent carbon removal. At scale, we can use bio-oil to make fossil-free iron.
Our carbon removal efforts began in 2020 with initial purchases from customers like Stripe, Shopify, and Microsoft. Since then, we've scaled to thousands of tons of carbon removal, grown to over a hundred employees, and established three locations in San Francisco, Colorado, and Louisiana.
We're expanding our team of ambitious, creative, and hands-on problem solvers. We value psychological safety, collaboration, and continuous learning. We take calculated risks and treat mistakes as opportunities to improve. If you're excited about tackling big challenges, we encourage you to explore our company values.
Come help us reverse climate change. Gigatons or bust!
About the Role
As an Engineering Fabricator at our Charm Colorado campus, you'll join a driven and highly technical team that is responsible for fabricating pyrolyzer and injection skid components, while also getting the opportunity to support the assembly + commissioning of new pyrolysis systems. This specific Engineering Fabrication role will provide critical and unique welding and build skills to make engineering designs come to life with deep collaboration with design engineers and operations staff. Working with fellow Charmers, vendors, and occasional third parties, you'll be directly contributing to new R&D assemblies and iterative design improvement on existing production equipment.
You're a great candidate for this role if you have experience with engineering drawing interpretation, metal fabrication, mechanical assembly, and are an excellent communicator/creative problem solver. The ideal candidate is safety-minded, proactive, hungry for new challenges, confident using machine tools and welding, and is able to effectively prioritize multiple tasks on a day-to-day basis. We use tools like Slack for quick back-and-forth with engineering, Onshape for reviewing designs and flagging issues early, and Jira to log builds, track revisions, and keep everyone in sync.
This role will report to our Engineering Technician Lead in Fort Lupton within the broader Engineering Department.
Your Responsibilities
  • Give written and verbal feedback on the design of the equipment. Offer ways to design or fabricate something more easily based on your experience. We want someone who is excited to work alongside our design engineers to create the best possible outcomes.
  • Fabricate key pieces of pyrolysis equipment from a range of design details. Some of our parts have full design drawings, and some are new concepts that we'll sketch together on a white board. We want you to be able to handle all of the above!
  • Use and maintain our shop tools, including being an advocate for safety and best practices for keeping them highly functioning.
  • Learn and navigate our CAD program (Onshape) to interface with design engineers and leverage the tool to create and document novel designs.
  • Collaborate with the procurement team with inventory management and sub-assembly workflows in the Fabrication shop to ensure all fabrication kits are properly located and traceable.
  • Participate in quality inspection and quality reviews alongside design engineers to make sure completed assemblies meet design intent
  • Learn and apply the various fabrication tools in our shop, CNC plasma table, plasma cutting, rotary welding table, pipe threader, 3D printer
  • Record your work in Confluence/JIRA/Google Product Suite, including providing documentation as needed.

You Bring
  • Bring a safety-first mindset to every task in the Fabrication Shop
  • 3 - 5 years of hands-on fabrication, welding, using hand tools, and mechanical assembly experience based on engineering designs.
  • Understanding, redlining, and implementing designs from technical drawings
  • Practical experience assembling/disassembling novel/complex mechanical systems.
  • High quality MIG/TIG welding skills (rough breakdown is 67% Stainless TIG, 33% MIG Carbon Steel/Stainless) - we typically work with 304 stainless
  • Proven experience with pipe and tube fitting/fixtureing, producing high quality weldments
  • The ability to work autonomously and troubleshoot on the job
  • Experience operating forklifts, telehandlers, scissor lifts, and/or a willingness to learn
  • A proactive, professional and "can do" attitude
  • Passion about contributing to our mission and growing the company
  • Must be physically able to climb ladders, bend, or crawl in awkward spaces
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time
  • There may be prolonged periods of standing and walking
  • Strong digital and in person communication, thorough documentation skills, and a working knowledge of / the ability to learn the Google Product Suite (Google Slides, Documents, Sheets, Drive, Gmail, etc.)

Bonus if you Bring
  • An ability to work with different suppliers to acquire the parts you need
  • Experience welding any exotic metals
  • Knowledge of welding codes or welding inspection methods (American Welding Society/AWS, American Society of Mechanical Engineers/ASME, American Petroleum Institute/API, etc.)
  • Pipe fitting, orbital tube welding, or other pipe weldment/assembly work
  • Experience with previous CAD softwares
  • Experience with CNC operations

$35 - $45 an hour
What We Offer
  • Equity ownership through stock options
  • 100% employee healthcare premiums covered
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with multiple plan options
  • Employer-funded HSA contributions for eligible HDHP plans
  • Traditional and Roth 401(k) with a 50% match on contributions up to 6%
  • Paid leave, including parental and medical leave
  • PPE and workwear allowances
  • Annual professional development stipend
  • Employee recognition programs that celebrate impactful work and team contributions
  • Opportunities for internal growth, career development, and transition into climate from a range of industries and backgrounds
