Contract Data Annotation involves completing specific annotation projects for AI training, often on a contractual basis. Data Labelers focus on labeling data to enhance machine learning models, typically performing similar tasks. Both roles require attention to detail and are used in AI/ML industries, but Contract Data Annotation emphasizes project-based work with defined deliverables.

What is a contract data annotation job?

A contract data annotation job involves labeling or tagging data—such as images, text, audio, or video—according to specific guidelines, usually on a temporary or project-based contract. These annotations help train machine learning models by providing accurate, human-labeled examples for algorithms to learn from. Contract workers are typically hired for a set period or project and may work remotely or on-site, depending on the employer. The work requires attention to detail, adherence to quality standards, and sometimes familiarity with specialized annotation tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Data Annotation Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Data Annotation Specialist, you need a keen eye for detail, strong analytical skills, and familiarity with data labeling standards, often supported by experience in data management or related fields. Proficiency with annotation platforms (such as Labelbox, Prodigy, or CVAT) and basic knowledge of data formats like JSON or XML are commonly required. Excellent communication, time management, and the ability to work independently help individuals excel in this often remote and deadline-driven role. These skills ensure high-quality, accurate data annotations that are vital for training reliable machine learning models.

What are some common challenges faced by contract data annotation professionals, and how can they be effectively managed?

Contract data annotation professionals often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistency in labeling, managing tight project deadlines, and ensuring data privacy. These challenges can be effectively managed by following detailed annotation guidelines, utilizing collaborative tools for team communication, and participating in regular quality assurance checks. Staying organized and proactive about seeking clarification from project leads also helps ensure high-quality, accurate results and a smooth workflow.

Job description

Summary:

Are you energized by fast moving AI programs and want to work at the forefront of multilingual technology? We are looking for a sharp, adaptable Project Coordinator to join a Multilingual AI Quality team and help scale operationally complex quality programs.

You will own the operational heartbeat of a quality audit program. That means coordinating across vendors, managing task pipelines, troubleshooting technical issues in real time, and delivering data driven quality reporting across multiple languages and a wide range of AI use cases.

You will work hands on with leading AI tools and platforms while solving operational challenges that directly shape how well AI performs for people across many languages. This is not a routine coordination role. It is fast paced, technically interesting, and you will see the tangible results of your work reflected in product quality at a global scale.

What makes it compelling:

  • Direct exposure to cutting edge multilingual AI and GenAI adjacent work
  • Coordinating across multiple languages, multiple vendors, and multimodal use cases, which is rare and valuable operational experience
  • Real potential for extension beyond the initial six months as the program grows
  • A fully remote arrangement

Responsibilities:

Task Coordination. Manage the task pipeline in the audit platform, flag bottlenecks, tooling issues, and blocked tasks, and triage incoming task requests while validating scope, volume, and feasibility.

Quality Reporting and Data Support. Pull and organize audit data for quality reporting, maintain vendor quality scorecards, and prepare quality insights for cross functional stakeholders.

Vendor Coordination. Manage day to day vendor communications across concurrent AI audit tasks, track deliverables and throughput by task and language, and monitor vendor quality patterns.

Someone fast, resourceful, and technically curious. You ramp quickly on unfamiliar tools, navigate ambiguity with ease, and keep multiple workstreams moving without dropping threads. You will be the connective tissue between vendors, language experts, and technical stakeholders across time zones.

Must have skills

  • 5+ years in project or program management, or operations in the tech industry, with a demonstrated ability to manage concurrent workstreams in a fast paced environment
  • Familiarity with multilingual AI annotation and audit workflows, or internationalization and localization experience
  • A fast learner with strong technical adaptability, able to quickly understand new platforms, AI models and products, and workflows, and to troubleshoot issues independently with minimal hand holding
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with clear documentation skills and the ability to create process docs, meeting notes, and reports for async and cross timezone audiences
  • Strong attention to detail

Nice to have

  • External vendor and partner coordination experience, with a proven track record managing deliverables, timelines, and clear communication with multiple third party partners across time zones

Experience and education

  • 5+ years in program coordination, project management, or operations in the tech industry
  • A BA or BS degree

This role moves quickly and rewards people who thrive in a building environment. A few things to be ready for:

  • Ambiguity, since the program is evolving and you will help build and improve processes as you go
  • Fast context switching across concurrent tasks, languages, vendors, and stakeholders
  • Cross timezone coordination with global partners, with US Pacific overlap required
  • Ramping on a complex and genuinely fascinating domain in multilingual AI
  • A high volume operational load, including multiple vendor syncs each week alongside ongoing queue tracking, triage, and reporting

Pursuant to the California Fair Chance Act, Los Angeles County Fair Chance Ordinance for Employers, Los Angeles Fair Chance Initiative for Hiring Ordinance, and San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, qualified applicants will be considered for assignment with arrest and conviction records. Criminal history may have a direct, adverse, and negative relationship with some of the material job duties of this position. These include the duties and responsibilities listed above, as well as the abilities to adhere to company policies, exercise sound judgment, effectively manage stress and work safely and respectfully with others, exhibit trustworthiness, meet client expectations, standards, and accompanying requirements, and safeguard business operations and company reputation.
