Job Description – Endoscopy/Gastroenterology (Endo/GI) Technician

Facility: Strong Memorial Hospital

 Position Summary:

Strong Memorial Hospital is seeking an experienced Endoscopy/Gastroenterology (Endo/GI) Technician to support physicians and nursing staff during diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal procedures. The Endo/GI Technician is responsible for preparing procedure rooms, maintaining endoscopic equipment, assisting during procedures, and ensuring compliance with infection prevention and high-level disinfection (HLD) standards. Candidates must have a minimum of two years of Endo/GI experience, previous travel experience, and HLD Certification is highly desired.

 Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare procedure rooms with the necessary endoscopic equipment, instruments, and supplies for scheduled GI procedures.
  • Assist physicians and nursing staff during diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including colonoscopy, EGD, ERCP, EUS, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and PEG tube placement.
  • Set up, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain endoscopy equipment and video imaging systems.
  • Clean, inspect, leak-test, disinfect, and properly reprocess flexible endoscopes according to manufacturer instructions and infection prevention guidelines.
  • Follow High-Level Disinfection (HLD) protocols and maintain accurate documentation of endoscope reprocessing activities.
  • Prepare and position patients for procedures while ensuring comfort, privacy, and safety.
  • Transport patients safely to and from the procedure and recovery areas as needed.
  • Assist with specimen collection, labeling, and transport to the laboratory following facility protocols.
  • Monitor inventory levels and restock procedure rooms with supplies, instruments, and equipment.
  • Perform routine quality assurance checks on endoscopy equipment and report equipment malfunctions promptly.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sterile procedural environment in accordance with hospital infection control standards.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, sterile processing staff, and other healthcare professionals to ensure efficient workflow and patient care.
  • Accurately document equipment usage, scope tracking, and reprocessing records.
  • Participate in departmental orientation, continuing education, quality improvement initiatives, and competency assessments.
  • Comply with hospital policies, Joint Commission standards, OSHA regulations, and patient safety protocols.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (Associate degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 2 years of recent Endoscopy/GI Technician experience.
  • Previous travel healthcare experience – Required.
  • Knowledge of endoscope handling, cleaning, and reprocessing procedures.
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification (if required by facility).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • High-Level Disinfection (HLD) Certification – Highly Desired.
  • Experience with automated endoscope reprocessors (AERs).
  • Experience in a hospital-based Endoscopy/GI unit.
