The Engagement Specialist plays a vital role in advancing the City of Flagstaff's climate and sustainability goals by leading communications, outreach, and behavior change initiatives. This position is responsible for creating engaging content across social media, newsletters, websites, and reports, while translating complex data into accessible public messaging. Key duties include managing the Neighborhood Sustainability Grant Program, serving as the liaison to the Sustainability Commission, and collaborating closely with internal departments, external partners, and the public to foster community and drive local sustainability efforts. Engagement Specialist
  • Assists in the development, coordination and administration of programs and projects
  • Develops and implements communication strategies for sustainability initiatives
  • Translates complex climate data into understandable and engaging content
  • Creates and manages content for reports, blogs, newsletters, websites, and social media, utilizing design tools such as Canva and Mailchimp
  • Maintains an active social media presence for the Flagstaff Sustainability Office, coordinating daily posts, moderating community conversations, and creating engaging behavior change and awareness campaigns
  • Leads collaborations with city divisions to complete special projects and initiatives to advance goals of the Flagstaff City Council, City Manager, and the Sustainability Division
  • Prepares and presents oral and written reports to the city council, city commissions, city manager, division director, and the Flagstaff community
  • Serves as the liaison to the Sustainability Commission, ensures compliance with state open meeting law and coordinates long-range planning efforts to support city goals
  • Oversees the Neighborhood Sustainability Grant Program, including budget, grant cycle, supports applicants and award winners, monitors compliance, tracks and reports outcomes, and ensures program fiscal stewardship of funds
  • Supports annual Innovate Waste and Carbon Dioxide Removal Challenge, including challenge promotion, processing, ensuring legal and procurement compliance
  • Monitors and tracks Sustainability Division education and outreach efforts for impacts, including participation, cost, and effectiveness
  • Represents the Sustainability Division at local and national meetings, seminars, and conferences
  • Utilizes digital media platforms and works with local media outlets to promote behavior change and raise awareness of Sustainability Division initiatives
  • Develops and implements communication strategies to support the division's outreach and engagement efforts
  • Leads efforts to establish and maintain positive community relations between the city and residents, the business community, media, outside agencies, and public officials

Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Public Relations or Administration, or related field
  • Two (2) years of project coordination experience in resource conservation and/or sustainability practices or related field
  • Or any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
  • Ability to utilize design principles to create attractive promotional materials, internal reports and/or communication materials
  • Experience marketing behavior change initiatives, building relationships with stakeholders, or collaborating across organizations or with partners
  • Knowledgeable of successful social marketing techniques and experience managing social media accounts
  • Experience working with and building trust within diverse communities
  • Experience with federal grants, other forms of federal funding, or federal reporting
  • One (1) year of supervisory experience, project coordination, budget management, or community organizing experience

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Must possess, or obtain upon employment, a valid Arizona driver's license.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.
  • Night and weekend work as required for events and meetings.
