CNCLathe Machinist
CNC Lathe Machinist
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced CNC Lathe Machinist to set up, program, and operate CNC lathes and turn-mill equipment to produce precision components to print. The ideal candidate will be responsible for interpreting engineering drawings, selecting tooling, optimizing cutting speeds and feeds, performing in-process inspection and finishing, and ensuring parts meet dimensional, surface finish, and tolerance requirements. This role supports continuous improvement, preventive maintenance, and adherence to quality and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up, operate, and monitor CNC lathes, turret lathes, and MillTurn/TurnMill machines to produce precision parts to print.
- Interpret blueprints, CAD models, and GD&T callouts to determine machining strategy and critical dimensions.
- Create, edit, and optimize CNC programs and G-code for lathes (Haas, Fanuc, Siemens or equivalent); utilize CAM systems (Mastercam, GibbsCAM, Fusion 360, CAMWorks) where applicable.
- Select and install tooling, live tooling, subspindles, and tooling offsets; set tool offsets and wear offsets accurately.
- Determine and apply appropriate cutting speeds, feeds, and coolant strategies for various materials (steel, stainless, aluminum, brass, plastics).
- Perform CNC setup, first article runs, in-process inspection, and final inspection using calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, and other metrology tools.
- Operate and/or support CMM inspection, surface finish measurement, and SPC data collection to validate part quality.
- Execute threading, boring, reaming, drilling, parting, tapping, and other lathe operations with consistent precision.
- Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and basic repairs on lathes and ancillary equipment to minimize downtime.
- Deburr, finish, and hand-inspect parts to meet surface finish and assembly requirements.
- Maintain accurate production paperwork, setup sheets, program revisions, and process documentation.
- Collaborate with engineering and production teams to suggest process improvements, tooling changes, and cost-saving measures.
- Train and mentor junior machinists on best practices, safe operation, and quality standards as needed.
- Adhere to all safety, environmental, and company policies and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
- Required: Proven experience as a CNC Machinist with hands-on work on CNC lathes (3+ years preferred).
- Proficient in CNC lathe operation, setup, and basic programming; ability to read and interpret technical blueprints and GD&T.
- Hands-on experience selecting tooling, setting tool offsets, and optimizing cutting speeds & feeds for a range of materials.
- Skilled with metrology tools (calipers, micrometers, bore gauges) and experience with quality inspection processes.
- Working knowledge of machining operations including threading, boring, reaming, parting, drilling, and tapping.
- Familiarity with CAM systems (Mastercam, GibbsCAM, Fusion 360, CAMWorks) and the ability to generate or modify toolpaths is strongly preferred.
- Nice to have: experience with G-code editing and controls including Haas, Fanuc, and Siemens.
- Nice to have: experience with live tooling, subspindles, turret lathes, and MillTurn/TurnMill machines.
- Nice to have: CAD experience (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor) and blueprint reading for setup and process planning.
- Nice to have: experience with CMM operation, surface finish measurement, SPC, and applying GD&T principles in inspection.
- Comfortable performing preventive maintenance and basic machine troubleshooting.
- Strong commitment to safety, good communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical certificate or apprenticeship in machining or manufacturing technology is a plus.
- Ability to lift and handle parts, stand for long periods, and work in a manufacturing environment.
