Job description

Outpatient Pediatrician (Locum Tenens)

Newark, NJ

Maternity Leave Coverage Part-Time, Structured Weekday Schedule

Are you a Board-Certified Pediatrician seeking a stable, part-time outpatient engagement with zero on-call obligations? Newark Beth Israel Medical Center is seeking a dedicated physician to provide seamless continuity of care for their ambulatory general pediatrics clinic during an upcoming maternity leave. Running from late summer through the winter, this position offers an exceptionally balanced schedule, strong resident interaction, and a highly collaborative clinic environment.

The Opportunity

Step into a busy, community-anchored ambulatory practice where you will manage routine pediatric health maintenance, acute illnesses, and developmental screenings.

  • Clinical Scope: Provide general ambulatory pediatric care to infants, children, and adolescents. The clinic focuses entirely on standard primary care medicine; any complex, high-acuity, or emergency presentations are seamlessly directed to the adjacent Emergency Department.

  • Minor Clinic Procedures: Daily procedural requirements are highly basic, including umbilical cauterization, suture/staple removal, and standard viral or bacterial swabs.

  • Robust Laboratory Support: An on-site phlebotomist handles all blood draws and specimen collections, allowing you to focus entirely on patient interaction and diagnostic decisions.

  • Academic Collaboration: Work alongside and help guide pediatric residents during designated afternoon clinic blocks, adding a rewarding teaching component to your week.

  • Integrated Technology: Utilize a centralized, single-platform Epic EMR system implemented identically across all outpatient and hospital networks.

  • Support & Team Dynamics: You will practice alongside four established full-time pediatricians (Dr. Mendez, Dr. Sarmiento, Dr. Peterson, and Dr. Lewis). While advanced practice providers are on-site, the locum physician carries no administrative or supervisory responsibility over them.

  • Patient Load: Maintain a steady, predictable workflow of 12 patients per half-day session or 24 patients during full-day clinics.

The Schedule

This maternity leave coverage features a highly structured, part-time weekly rotation with absolutely no on-call, evening, or weekend hours required:

  • Tuesday: 9:00 AM 5:00 PM (Collaborating with residents in the afternoon)

  • Wednesday: 9:00 AM 5:00 PM

  • Thursday: 9:00 AM 12:00 PM Clinic 1:00 PM 5:00 PM Dedicated Admin Time

  • Friday: Alternating schedule 9:00 AM 5:00 PM every other week 9:00 AM 12:00 PM every other week (with afternoon meeting time)

Location: Newark, NJ

As New Jersey s largest metropolis, Newark is a major cultural and economic engine undergoing a dynamic urban renaissance.

  • Arts & Entertainment: Home to the world-renowned New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) and the Prudential Center, hosting premier concerts, cultural festivals, and professional sports.

  • Culinary Vitality: Located minutes from the famous Ironbound District, a neighborhood globally recognized for its incredible, authentic Portuguese, Spanish, and Brazilian dining.

  • Transit Super-Hub: Unrivaled geographic connectivity. Newark Penn Station provides immediate access to NJ Transit, PATH trains, and Amtrak, placing you less than 20 minutes from downtown Manhattan.

Compensation & Shift Logistics
  • Contract Structure: Competitive hourly rate with built-in daily and weekly overtime protections (overtime rates apply after 12 hours worked in a single day).

  • Assignment Timeline: Fully defined 6-month block running from August 3, 2026, through January 31, 2027.

  • Privileging: The medical center is equipped to grant full clinical privileges, with standard or temporary options processed through the medical staff office.

Candidate Requirements

To step smoothly into this established medical team, candidates must satisfy the following professional criteria:

  • Degree: MD or DO from an accredited medical school.

  • Board Status: Strict Board Certification in Pediatrics is required.

  • Licensure: Must hold an active, unencumbered New Jersey State Medical License.
