What is Adobe InDesign scripting?

Adobe InDesign scripting involves writing code to automate tasks and customize workflows within Adobe InDesign. Scripts can be written in JavaScript, AppleScript (for Mac), or VBScript (for Windows). These scripts can help with repetitive tasks such as formatting documents, batch processing files, or creating complex layouts, making InDesign more efficient and powerful for users. Scripting is especially useful for designers, publishers, and developers working with large or complex documents.

What are the typical challenges faced when collaborating with designers and developers on Adobe InDesign scripting projects?

Collaboration between designers and developers on InDesign scripting projects often involves bridging the gap between creative vision and technical implementation. Designers may have specific layout or automation needs, while developers focus on scripting efficiency and code maintainability. Clear communication is essential to ensure scripts meet design requirements and function reliably within production workflows. Frequent feedback loops and documentation help align expectations, streamline revisions, and prevent misunderstandings throughout the project lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Adobe InDesign scripting specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Adobe InDesign Scripting Specialist, you need strong proficiency in scripting languages such as JavaScript (ExtendScript), a solid understanding of InDesign's architecture, and preferably a degree or certification in graphic design, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud, version control systems, and relevant automation tools is highly valuable. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for understanding client needs and delivering precise automation solutions. These competencies are crucial for streamlining publishing workflows, reducing manual errors, and maximizing productivity in design environments.

Job description

We are looking for a Technical Customer Success Engineer to join our global CS team. The position is based out of our New York City office located near Bryant Park in Midtown Manhattan, and we're looking for local candidates who can join us in the office two days each week to collaborate with peers and build on our company culture.
Company Description
OpenAsset is the leading marketing platform for the Architecture, Construction, and Engineering industries, trusted by 1,000+ clients over 20 years. Our mission is to be the most innovative partner to AEC firms, delivering solutions that help win more projects. We recently announced a new AI-Proposal product, Shred, to continue this mission.
We're a diverse, collaborative, and fast-growing team of 100+ employees with offices in New York and London and a global client base. Backed by Marlin Equity Partners, we're passionate about creating an inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued and has a voice, and we actively hire from a diverse pool of candidates.
About the Role
The Technical Customer Success Engineer is the technical backbone of the client journey, helping AEC firms successfully evaluate, implement, integrate, and adopt OpenAsset. This role combines hands-on technical problem-solving with prospect and client-facing work across all stages of the client journey, from Onboarding to Adopting, Nurturing, and Renewals & Growth.
You'll design solutions, build integrations, and set clients up for long-term success, working directly with client data, custom InDesign and Word templates, and APIs to bring those solutions to life.
Key Responsibilities
Solution Design
  • Partner with internal and external account stakeholders to understand client workflows and technical requirements.
  • Recommend approaches for data migration and import, integrations, and automation.
  • Support technical validation and light-weight proofs of concept when needed.

Technical Support Throughout the Client Journey
  • Configure client environments, including templates, data architecture, and integrations.
  • Prepare and import project and employee files, data, and metadata.
  • Set up and validate integrations with tools like CRMs, CMSs, and other systems via out-of-the-box Connectors and API.
  • Participate in client calls as the technical point of contact.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders across Sales and CS to ensure technical solutions align with client goals and key commercial timelines.
  • Collaborate with Product and Engineering to solve for recurring technical patterns or gaps and inform the roadmap.
  • Contribute reusable scripts, templates, and documentation that raise the technical bar for the wider team.

Scripting & Automation
  • Write scripts (Python or JavaScript) to support template automation (InDesign, Word, PowerPoint) and data transformation and migration.
  • Use APIs to connect OpenAsset with other systems and automate client workflows.

Markers of Success in the Role
  • Technical work across the client journey is scoped and delivered on time, configured correctly the first time, and communicated clearly and proactively to internal and client stakeholders.
  • Teammates consistently rely on you as the trusted technical voice in pre- and post-sales conversations related to Onboarding and Professional Services.
  • Recurring technical requests are automated or templated rather than solved manually each time.
  • Clients report a smooth, confidence-inspiring technical experience during implementation and beyond.
  • Integrations and data migrations are delivered with minimal rework or post-launch fixes.

Skills & Experience
AI Fluency
This role moves fast. You'll be juggling scripting, integrations, and client-facing technical work across a high volume of accounts at once. We're looking for someone who naturally reaches for AI tools to move faster and smarter: drafting and debugging scripts, working through unfamiliar APIs, writing documentation, or troubleshooting edge cases. This isn't about AI expertise for its own sake, it's about utilizing AI to produce a best-in-class client experience.
Required
  • 3-5+ years of experience in a technical, client-facing role where you bring a client-first mindset into all work you deliver.
  • Experience with scripting (Python or JavaScript).
  • Familiarity with REST APIs and making API requests.
  • Comfortable troubleshooting technical issues across systems.

Preferred
  • Experience working in SaaS.
  • Exposure to Adobe InDesign or template automation.
  • Basic understanding of networking concepts (HTTP, APIs, etc.).
  • Exposure to generative AI / LLM-powered tools.

Plus
  • Experience or familiarity with the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry.

Working Attributes
  • Comfortable owning technical problems end-to-end, from discovery through delivery.
  • Balances technical depth with clear, non-jargon communication for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Operates with a strong sense of ownership and urgency during client-facing engagements.
  • Approaches problems with a solutions-oriented, detail-driven mindset.
  • Adaptability: thrives in a quickly evolving, dynamic, and agile environment.
