What is a 1D simulation engineer?

1D Simulation Engineers are professionals who use one-dimensional (1D) simulation tools to model and analyze the behavior of complex systems, such as automotive engines, hydraulic circuits, or thermal management systems. They focus on simulating the performance of these systems using mathematical models, often to predict behavior, optimize designs, or solve engineering problems before physical prototypes are built. Their work helps reduce development costs, improve efficiency, and accelerate product development cycles. 1D Simulation Engineers typically work closely with design, testing, and other engineering teams.

How does a 1D simulation engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

As a 1D Simulation Engineer, you will frequently work alongside design, testing, and product development teams to ensure that simulation models align with project requirements and real-world data. Collaboration often involves sharing simulation results, validating models with physical test data, and iteratively refining system behavior based on feedback from other engineering disciplines. Effective communication and the ability to translate technical findings into actionable insights for non-simulation stakeholders are crucial for project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 1D simulation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 1D Simulation Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering fundamentals, physics, and mathematics, typically supported by a degree in mechanical, automotive, or aerospace engineering. Proficiency with 1D simulation tools such as GT-SUITE, AMESim, or Simulink, along with experience in data analysis and modeling, is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and collaborative communication skills help distinguish top performers in this field. These skills are crucial for accurately modeling complex systems, optimizing designs, and ensuring effective teamwork in multidisciplinary engineering projects.

What is the difference between 1D Simulation Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

Aspect1D Simulation EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related fields; proficiency in simulation softwareBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering; CAD and design software skills
Work EnvironmentEngineering teams, R&D labs, simulation centersDesign offices, manufacturing facilities, R&D labs
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, energy sectors focusing on system-level simulationsProduct development, machinery, consumer electronics

The main difference is that a 1D Simulation Engineer specializes in creating and analyzing system-level simulations using specialized software, focusing on fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and system behavior. In contrast, a Mechanical Design Engineer primarily focuses on designing physical components and assemblies. Both roles require engineering credentials, but their daily tasks and tools differ significantly.

Job description

Job Title:

Research Scientist, Analytical R&D

Job Description:

The Role:

Entegris is currently seekingan AnalyticalResearchScientistto join ourResearch & Development Team in Aurora, Illinois.

In this role, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional Entegris teams in a fast-paced, innovative environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in applying advanced analytical techniques to develop creative solutions that support the development and commercialization of high-performanceadvanced materialssolutionsfor the semiconductor industry.

What You'll Do

  • Develop and apply comprehensive materials characterization strategiesusing state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation and techniques, including NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) spectroscopy, to build mechanistic understanding ofstructure, composition, and performance relationships in complex material systems.

  • Collaborate closely with analytical and product development teams to develop quantitative characterization methods that elucidate structure-function relationshipsacrossnanoparticles, polymers, and chemical additives in aqueous systems.

  • Expand and strengthen in-house characterization, simulation, and theoretical capabilities in colloidal science, polymer science, and materialssciencewhile collaborating with external laboratories, universities, and instrument vendors to identify and implement valuable characterization techniques.

  • Design, develop, and execute new analytical capabilities and methodologies that support new product development, intellectual property generation, emerging technologies, and technical problem-solving efforts.

  • Lead the planning, execution, and documentation of analytically focused projects, ensuring technical rigor and alignment with business objectives.

  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert in analytical characterization-with particular emphasis on NMR spectroscopy-supporting multiple business areas across the company.

  • Communicate findings and conclusions effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences in a timelymanner andcontribute toinnovation submissions andpatent filings as needed.

What We Seek

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline is required.

  • Minimum of 3 years of industrial experience,orPostdoctoral experience in academia, with at least 1 year in a field highly relevant to CMP or colloidal science,is strongly preferred.

  • Experience building and maintaining academic-industrial collaborations is a plus.

  • Strong expertise in NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) spectroscopy, along with experience in one or more analytical techniques used to characterize organic and inorganic materials. These may include, but are not limited to: LC-MS, HPLC, IC, ICP, FTIR, electron microscopy (SEM, TEM, STEM), XRD, XRF, EDX, particle size analysis (CPS, SPOS, DLS, laser diffraction), GPC/SEC, electroanalytical measurements, rheometry, or interfacial characterization methods.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop novel analytical methodologies and approaches for complex, multifaceted projects, particularly using NMR spectroscopy. Experience with additional analytical techniques such as LC-MS is a plus.
