The Humane Society Legislative Fund (HSLF) is a 501(c)(4) organization which seeks to pass animal protection laws at the state and federal level, to educate the public about animal protection issues, and to support humane candidates for office. HSLF is seeking a Senior Field Organizer, who will promote our animal protection goals by organizing a grassroots engagement campaign in targeted congressional districts in order to stop the “Protect Interstate Commerce Act.

This position will be responsible for

  • Advancing events and developing turnout plans for volunteers and organizers;
  • Creating and executing a field plan for specific geographic regions;
  • Recruiting, training, managing and motivating teams of volunteers to execute on the ground activities;
  • Rallying constituents who are registered voters, or willing to be registered, to contact their federal representatives in opposition of the bill;
  • Engaging with “influentials” in key districts—including business and non-profit leaders, faith leaders, and other community leaders—to speak out against the above-referenced measure;
  • Providing volunteers with positive leadership, culture, resources, and guidance required to succeed in their respective congressional districts.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required;
  • Minimum of two years of experience in holding community organizing, volunteer management, or similar work;
  • Experience in recruiting, training, motivating and leading volunteers preferred;
  • Some knowledge of legislative processes;
  • Ability to train and lead volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including public speaking and persuasion skills;
  • Comfort with making “cold calls” and speaking with stakeholders of various political/social viewpoints;
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to relate to a wide variety of constituents and stakeholders;
  • Ability to work independently and in team settings, while taking direction from headquarters on strategy and execution;
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours including weekends;
  • Tenacity and ingenuity in order to accomplish goals in situations where there isn’t a clearly-established blueprint for success;
  • Basic computer literacy and database skills;
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively.
