The Mission of Portland’s Bureau of Development Services is to promote safety, livability, and economic vitality through efficient and collaborative application of building and development codes.
THE POSITION:
The Mechanical Engineer with the Bureau of Development Services (BDS) works as part of the Plan Review Team within the Plan Review & Permitting Services division. They are responsible for and perform reviews of construction plans for heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, refrigeration, exhaust and smoke control systems for compliance with state building codes and other applicable city, state and federal regulations. The Mechanical Engineer works independently; uses initiative, exercises sound and professional problem-solving judgment; prioritizes responsibilities, and multi-tasks while adhering to timelines and customer service expectations.
Work includes:
- Reviewing of the building envelope, mechanical systems and lighting for compliance with energy conservation requirements;
- Working collaboratively with customers and coworkers including design professionals, contractors, owners, plans examiners, fire marshals, structural engineers, inspectors and others to assist in answering questions, interpreting complex technical concepts and offering solutions, from design concept through construction; and
- Providing excellent customer service in an equitable manner to meet the Bureau’s expectations and the needs of the City of Portland’s community.
The current opportunity is in the Bureau of Development Services; however, the eligible list generated from this recruitment may also be used to fill future vacancies in the other bureaus. Fluency in a second language is desirable, but not required. You are encouraged to ask questions about the certifications and qualifications for this position.
