How to Keep Up Job Search Momentum Over the Holidays

Many people decide to put their job search on hold during the holidays. The common belief is that hiring managers are either gone or too distracted to give much attention to hiring new employees. But many experts say that this impression is often inaccurate. In fact, the holiday season can be an especially good time to find a new job.

With so many people suspending their job search over the holidays, there’s often less competition. Also, many employers want new hires in place before the start of the new fiscal year. Plus, employers are often able to use unspent money in their budget.

This means you should ramp up your job search right now. Even though schedules can be more erratic this time of the year, there are ways to work it to your advantage. Here are a few ideas.

Attend Holiday Parties

The holiday season is one of the best times of the year to network. There are lots of social events, and most people are in a happy and generous mood. Sharing good times with others is often the best way to cement relationships. Don’t limit yourself to business-related functions. Any social event—from a neighborhood block party to a school carnival—is a networking opportunity. The more you put yourself out there, the better chance you’ll have. After all, you never know who might show up at your neighbor’s holiday dinner party.

Keep Your Game Face On

Networking during the holidays can be great because everyone’s relaxed, having fun and in a good mood. That said, it’s important to not let things get out of hand. Know your limit, and remember to be professional. Be in control of what you’re saying and how you’re saying it.

Show Some Holiday Spirit

Reconnect with old friends and business associates, and reach out to contacts and potential employers. If you’re the type to send out holiday cards, be sure to include any valuable contacts you’ve made or places you’ve interviewed in the last year. Unless you know a person’s particular faith and tradition, it’s safer to send a generic “Happy Holidays” card rather than a specific Christmas or Hanukkah card.

Although physical cards are nicer, you could send out a holiday e-card instead. When appropriate, include a personal note, thanking your contacts for meeting with you in the past year and updating them on what you’ve been up to professionally. You could close by suggesting coffee or drinks in the near future.

And don’t forget to use the holidays as an opportunity for get-togethers with old friends as well. Share your job goals and be specific about what you’re looking for.

Volunteer

Volunteering over the holidays is an excellent way to learn new skills and meet new people outside of your normal circles. Many non-profits can use the extra help and giving your time to others in need can give your confidence a boost and remind you of what’s truly important in life.

Host Your Own Get-Together

Why wait for others to call you when you can arrange your own holiday fete? If you live in a tiny apartment, invite a small group over for drinks and appetizers, or arrange something at one of your favorite restaurants or bars.

Be strategic about whom to include. A couple of good friends who will hit it off with some great business contacts works better than complete strangers. Hosting a few get-togethers can expand your network while giving you all a great excuse to celebrate and have fun.
