Job description

Assists with the daily operations of a department or work unit. Develops program guidelines and policies and may be responsible for the implementation of major programs or projects within a department.

The University of Memphis is a leading, student-centered, urban public R1 research institution. Located in Memphis, Tennessee, on 1,160 acres. The University serves a population of nearly 20,000 students and 2,500 employees, including more than 1,000 full-time faculty members. The University offers bachelor's degrees in more than 230 areas of study, master's degrees in more than 50 subjects and doctoral degrees in 26 disciplines; supported an institutional record of more than $100 million in research awards for FY24; and has an operating budget of close to $500 million.

Bachelor's degree in a relevant area and five (5) years of appropriate experience OR master's degree and three (3) years of appropriate experience. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time.

  • Responsible for all areas of media and public relations, which includes independently crafting, developing, pitching and executing the University's overall strategy to drive outstanding tactical implementation of innovative Public Relations initiatives and media opportunities. Works with University Partners to ensure consistent messaging across all channels. Monitors external news, events, and trends to leverage information for media outreach and other visibility opportunities. 
     
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with local, regional and national media outlets to support broader university messages, and works to publish timely information, such as press releases, interviews, and other marketing materials.
    Creates and takes ownership of the University's public relations initiatives and strategies, and ensures that all communication strategies are consistent, reflecting the University's strategic vision. Works with the Crisis Management Team to ensure all external messaging is accurate, consistent and timely. 
     
  • Manages day-to-day public relations activities, including writing press releases, media advisories, feature stories, op-eds, website content, social media copy and other promotional materials in support of the University's communications efforts as needed. 
     
  • Tracks and measure earned media efforts. Provide quarterly and annual media reports. 
     
  • Informs campus-wide constituents of PR procedures, and best practices and provides public relations and communications consulting to ensure consistent framing of messages. Manages relationships with University Partners to optimize collaboration opportunities and offers ongoing support to University Partners including but not limited to communications strategy, planning, media outreach, interview preparation, and media training. 
     
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
