Job description

divh2Code Enforcement Specialist/h2pUnder close supervision of a departmental supervisor, performs specialized work enforcing city codes and ordinances pertaining to signs, housing, litter, overgrowth, abandoned vehicles, rubbish, and other code violations. Work involves investigating, handling, writing violation notices, and resolving numerous complaints and problems dealing with code violations. Additional responsibilities involve the dissemination of information to various organizations, governmental agencies, and public officials.

The successful candidate will be even-tempered, communicative, thorough in his or her research of applicable laws, and able to handle conflict in a professional manner./pulliPerforms inspections of houses and property for conformance with applicable codes pertaining to signs, housing, litter, overgrowth, abandoned vehicles, rubbish, and other violations/liliInterprets and enforces the provisions of applicable city codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations/liliResponds to complaints and questions related to code enforcement issues/liliResearches problems and initiates problem resolution/liliDiscusses problem areas with property owners, landlords, and contractors/liliGathers information and evidence for prosecution of violators; interviews citizens; prepares and presents cases to administrative hearing court and testifies as needed/liliMaintains records of inspection activities; makes photographic records of violations. Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, inspection reports, notices, formal warnings, or other documents/liliCommunicates with supervisors, employees, other departments, city council members, board members, attorneys, contractors, property owners, landlords, outside agencies, community groups, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems/liliPerforms other work as required by Program Director/li/ulh2Qualifications/h2ulliHigh school diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate of competency./liliThree years of experience in code inspection, construction inspection, building construction work, or other closely related field is preferred./liliMust be proficient in operating a computer and must have experience using programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint./liliBusiness letter writing experience is a plus./liliValid drivers license/li/ulpstrongKey Skills/Competencies/strong/pulliKnowledge of city, state, and federal regulations./liliSkill in the safe operation of a light motor vehicle. A drivers license is required./liliAbility to keep records and to prepare periodic reports./liliAbility to interpret and explain various codes to the public./liliAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships with professionals, administrative superiors, civic and governmental organizations, and the general public./liliAbility to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing to individuals and groups./liliAbility to positively and diplomatically deal with customers, whether they are in a pleasant or angry mood, helping them resolve their problem./liliAbility to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions./liliAbility to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division./li/ulpstrongPersonal Qualities/strong IBTS places a high value on certain personal traits that work toward creating a positive, professional, and supportive work environment, which is essential for working together and achieving success.
