Job description

Department: Rural Health Clinic-Hospital Reports To: Chief Executive Officer

FLSA Status: Exempt Travel: Frequent

Position Summary

A member of Community HealthCare System's (CHCS) Medical Staff that provides comprehensive orthopedic care in both an outpatient Rural Health Clinic setting and an inpatient Critical Access Hospital environment. This role combines high-impact rural medicine with a supportive, collaborative practice that prioritizes patient access, continuity, and quality.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

Provide consultation and referral services to CHCS's Clinic providers for Orthopedic services of patients.

Provide evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and management of musculoskeletal injuries, disorders, and diseases for patients of all ages.

Perform orthopedic procedures including fracture care, joint injections, casting/splinting, and minor surgical interventions within the scope of CAH capabilities.

Conduct outpatient clinic visits in a Rural Health Clinic setting with a focus on accessible, patient-centered care.

Perform surgical procedures as applicable and appropriate to facility resources (e.g., arthroscopy, joint repairs, hardware placement).

Coordinate and manage referrals for advanced surgical services when required.

Hospital & Emergency Support

Provide orthopedic consultation for emergency department cases, inpatients, and observation patients.

Participate in hospital call coverage rotation, ensuring timely response to urgent orthopedic needs.

Collaborate with ED physicians, hospitalists, primary care providers, and ancillary staff to support coordinated patient care.

Teamwork & Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Work closely with nurses, physical therapists, radiology, and rehabilitation staff.

Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, care pathways, and clinical protocols.

Participate in case discussions, peer review, and continuing education activities.

Documentation & Compliance

Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in the EHR.

Adherent to CAH and RHC regulatory standards, including CMS and state rural health guidelines.

Promote a safe and respectful patient environment consistent with hospital policies.

Qualifications

Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.

Board Certified or Board Eligible in Orthopedic Surgery.

Valid medical license to practice in the State of Kansas

Current DEA registration.

Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and procedural skills

Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities

Commitment to compassionate and patient-centered care

Experience in a rural or Critical Access Hospital setting preferred but not required.

Strong communication skills and commitment to rural community health.

Work Schedule & Expectations

Full-time schedule with shared call rotation.

Mix of clinic and surgical time depending on community needs.

Five (5) days a week splitting time, between Onaga, Holton, and St. Marys Clinic
